Karen's Story

Hi, I am the girl who was shy and quiet so many years ago that you probably don't remember me. I have since shed my shy side, although still tend to be quiet preferring to listen to others than say something for the sake of being heard. I grew up on Kingsland Avenue on the east side of town. I attended the Simpson School (was saddened to see that it was recently torn down as my grandmother had also attended school there), Dag Hammarskjold, and then Lyman Hall. I spent the first two years of my college life at UConn/Storrs campus and then moved on to the city of Boston, where I attended Northeastern University (I discovered Boston while visiting Donna Schott at BC during my freshman year. I fell in love with the city and decided that was where I needed to be). After graduating from NU I stayed in Boston and lived around the city for many years. During that time, I attended graduate school at BU and earned a master's degree in Public Health, got married, had three children (three girls) and had a successful career in health care management. In 1999, my family and I moved to Nantucket island so my husband could pursue a full time career as a scrimshander/artist. Since moving I have been working as a special education Teaching Assistant at our local elementary school. I am in the process of working on a master's degree in special education and was recently certified to teach. I keep in touch with Donna Schott, Sarah Sinclair and Pat Horto...Expand for more
n--not in regular touch but at least once a year touch. I used to be in touch with Jane Miles but have lost contact with her. My kindergarten boyfriend was David Jones. We used to walk to school together sometimes. My first teenage boyfriend was Donald Phee. We "dated" in 7th grade. I do not think we ever said more than five words to each other and when we "went out", we were always accompanied by a pack of friends--I remember the girls (Janice Suplinkas and Michelle Giannoni), but not the boys. Other than that, I had numerous crushes, typically on boys who did not know I even existed, but oh well. If there was one thing I could take back or do differently is I would have been nicer to Paul Coitrone--he was always nice to me. My favorite high school teacher was Mr. Doyle, as he is the only one who taught me things that still have meaning and I can still remember. His teaching of the history behind the Vietnam War is still fresh in my mind as is our attending the play "Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?" at the Yale Reportoire Theatre. Mr. Rotolo was my 2nd favorite. Gail Duffy was my best friend in elementary school, but I do not know what happened to her. Do you? I do not remember much about high school which is too bad (and it is not because I was in a fog either). I do remember the day Robert Pareti died and still wish that day could have had a different outcome. He was a special young man.
