Karen Johnson:

CLASS OF 1970
Reisterstown, MD

Karen's Story

After Franklin, I worked for 2 years for my family's printing company before deciding to go to college. Was in my sophomore year at Towson when I accidentally discovered my carrer path while talking to my study partner in Botany class. I graduated from Towson and St. Joseph's Hospital with a Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology in August 1976. I worked as a Med. Tech. at Johns Hopkins Oncology Center for 10 years before moving to Nashville, TN in March 1987 to learn more about Flow Cytometry. While in Nashville, I attended one performance of the Grand Old Opry, because my Uncle was visiting and really wanted to see it. Once was quite enough! Fortunately, Nashville hosted lots of other concerts and I was fortunate to see quite a few great concerts there. The best one had to be Def Lepard, then U2, Whitesnake, Phil Collins, Don Henley, Pat Benatar, Styx, Yes, Heart, Great White, Charlie Daniels Volunteer Jam with guest Ted Nugent. I even blew off an exam to get my state Med. Tech. License to go see the Monsters of Rock concert in Memphis (Kingdom Come, Dokken, Metallica, Scorpions, and Van Halen with Sammy Hagar). It was great! And, I took the exam the next time it was offered and managed to pass so, I think I made the right decision. Just in case you're wondering what happened to the quiet girl I was in High School, I still like classical music, too. I eventually supervised the Flow Cytometry dept. at National Reference Lab for 4 years before moving to Temple, TX to be closer to family. I was the Immunology Supervisor at Scott & White Hospital for 4 years and liked explore state parks throughout central TX. Joined a photography club and learn...Expand for more
ed some techniques for taking nature pictures. Visited relatives in San Antonio and my sister Pam in Bryan while living in Temple but, when my boss resigned at S&W, I decided I didn't want to work for his boss and found a job in Atlanta, GA. I branched out from Flow Cytometry into molecular diagnostics and helped to set up the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) dept for Quintiles Labs. My mom I and bought a house in Smyrna, GA although she hasn't made the move from MD yet. She keeps threatening! After 13 years at Quintiles, and "breaking in" 5 different lab managers, I decided to take a break. I spent 6 months changing the previous owner's landscaping and have just started a new job at a local hospital, working evening shift where it's nice and quiet. Now I can garden in the morning, while it's relatively cool, and then go to work in the afternoon. A perfect schedule! The rest of the time I spend talking to, writing to, and visiting my nieces and nephews. My brother Jeff and his wife have a 10 year old son and my little sister Nancy and her husband have 9 year old twins (girl and boy) and an 8 year old daughter. They are all so much fun to spoil! I just wish I could convince them to move South but they seem to like it where they are. Meanwhile, My sister Pam's two daughters have graduated high school and the oldest is beginning her senior year at Sam Houston State College. The younger one is still "finding" her path. I'm still a big reader and like nothing more than a good mystery novel. Since living in Smyrna, I've added gardening and bird watching to my hobbies, along with the hiking and photography hobbies I started while living in Nashville.
