Karen's Story
I went to CSULB where I got my BS in physics. Then to UCLA to get my MS in Atmospheric Science. From where I was in high school, I had no idea that I would ever major in such an intellectual discipline. Before that, I'd been a bookkeeper and needed something different. However, I never worked in the field, instead I started up a tutoring business, tutoring kids in math & physics.
I met the love of my life, Jeff, when I was at CSULB. We got married in December 1990. We shared a lot of interests and traveled to a lot of different places. He died in May 2010, so it's been a tough couple of years. Eventually, I'd like to get married again.
The other loves of my life are my little dog, Duchess (pictured with me) - she's a minpin and usually hysterical; and my 7-year old twin nieces. They came over this afternoon, and I put makeup on them and nail polish, since...Expand for more
they were going to a party afterwards. Often, we'll paint together, do crafts, or play chutes and latters or mousetrap, swim at the Y and other fun stuff.
I took up watercolor painting about 10 years ago. I've had a couple of group shows, but I'm not really into selling things. I've had one commission for a cornucopia that I've been trying to get to for a year or more. Commissions are difficult because it's hard to work up enthusiasm for something that I'm not passionate about.
After my father died, my 90-year old mother was afraid to be alone at night especially - she's afraid that she'll fall or her sugars will get too low. So I moved in with her. It works since I have a place to live and she has my help, as well as 2 other caregivers.
Anyway, that's a snapshot of what I've been doing the last 40 years. And, can you believe we're all nearing 60???
