Karen's Story

Life Since leaving Gladstone, I travelled across the country quite afew times, finally meeting and marrying a high school fella when I found myself back in Vancouver. That didn't last, no hard feelings though, and then I got engaged a few years later and became pregnant and gave birth to one son, Kristoffer, who is 26 now, but his father and I never did manage to hook up legally. So, after afew years of that I met someone in Victoria who was from Fort Erie, Ontario where he swept me off to just after we married in Vancouver. That marriage lasted 13 years, but was very bad. So much for the third one being the charm. I did, however, finally meet the man who I will be spending the rest of my life with. We taught scuba diving in Southern Ontario for about 8 years, then when Ian,(my husband) became terminally ill at the same time as my father getting throat cancer out here in BC (Gabriola Island to be precise) we made the move back to BC where my mother and I held vigal (sp?)only to become very blessed that my father got better after surgery and Ian seems to be breathing better out here...(oh ya, he got sick from bad air being put into our scuba tanks and after 300+ dives a year, plus pool time, that's alot of bad air..charcoal slivers coming through our filters. He was supposed to die 8 years ago, but he is still here and loving every minute of the west coast (Lala land he calls it)and we both are disabled (for me it's degenerative disc disease of my spine) but together it is absolutely amazing what we can and do accomplish. He loves gardening and Zen and having been a counselor for 20 years he has hung up his shingle and practices to the unfortunate (rather than the wealthy) and I sometimes help him in this as well. We are partners in everything. He once told me that he would rather be terminally ill and with me than totally healthy and without me, so, come on girls, where do you find men like that? Answer...you don't. So, we are on our own little Island (where my parents live too) called Gabriola Island and it is a 20-minute ferry ride from Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. My hobbies are aquariums and ponds, I even have an aquarium in the bathroom. I also enjoy drawing in any texture and painting as well. I have done alot of ceramics which I'm real proud of. What else, I guess the only thing I can add here before closing is that if anyone remembers how bad I looked in High School, well I kinda turned out pretty well and just celebrated my 50th birthday last August by having a block party wearing a mini-ski...Expand for more
rt. Something I never thought I would ever be able to do since I was, oh, 18. I hope to hear from some of you anyways...like maybe Judy Jones, Darrell Tetar, Kathy Zajak, Diane MacKillop...I'd have to go back to the list to remember any other names right now. So, go ahead. I will look forward to hearing from anyone who knew me at Gladstone. School I was pretty private in high school, so any "crushes" I guess were kept to myself. Sorry. I liked two teachers at Gladstone, actually. One was Mr. Pike (my grade 10 math teacher) even if he did fail me once and made me do gr. 10 math again in gr. 11. And the other was Mr.Holt(?). He used to read war stories to us while sitting on the corner of his desk. Also Mr. Stevens(on?) who was my English teacher who had a penchant for talking about his cat. The funniest memories I have of high school were times spent with Judy Jones. If you're out there Judy, I'd love to hear from you. Workplace First serious job was co-owner of a contruction company in Ontario with my last husband for 13 years, while at the same time I was Assistant Manager and Auditor/Bookkeeper of the Quality Inn where we lived. Then when we went our separate ways, I met my present husband, Ian, who spent his adult career life as a Counselor for about 20 yrs. when he burned out and decided to take up scuba diving and finally ended up teaching it for about 6-7 years. When we met,he taught me how to scuba dive to the point that I began teaching with him. Professionally through P.A.D.I., which is the world's largest teaching corporation of scuba diving in the world. I worked my way all the way up to Assistant Scuba Instructor and had a ball. Now, at the present, Ian has given up diving for health reasons and has re-kindled his counseling career, but quietly and from our home and for those who normally couldn't afford it. I help when I can and enjoy it very very much. It is quite fulfilling, but can be disturbing at the same time. We've met alot of people who live on our little island this way, but also because Ian just loves to go and hang out at our island's jazz cafe and meet with anyone and everyone. He also writes a column for our local newspaper which is well received. All in all, I couln't ask for a better life. Military Nope, sorry, didn't get involved with the Military. Growing up in the 70's was a very political time for the military, but I once marched in a protest march to make Victoria a "nuke-free zone." That was very intense. It worked though. But, that's all folks.
