Karen's Story

03/06/16......Went to Alaska by myself to celebrate my 65th birthday. So far I have had the retirement from hell !!!! Life on planet earth I retired from a teaching career in June 2014 God only knows what's coming next. 08/11/11..I discovered that I cannot retire for at least 2 more years. My immediate fate has been sealed. I guess there is still more that I need to learn before I can stop teaching. Get the pun? Ha ha. And, I'm back again with the "heartache kid"...Maybe this time it will be easier for us both. Well, I'm almost done with my teaching career. I have no idea what's coming next The last time I wrote here, I had a lot more confidence then I do now. I took some pictures this past Memorial day weekend '2011. This is what I look like at age 60. I still look ok but it's kind of amazing to realize that I'm 60!!!!!!! I never remarried after my husband died. I have had one strong romantic relationship, but it just didn't ever seem to run well, and it caused a lot of heartache for me. My son is doing great. He is the Chief of the Southampton Volunteer Ambulance, works at Southampton Hospital and attends school full time. He is buying a house less than 1 mile from my home. This makes me very happy. I'm trying to decide if I should retire or work one more year. I have to decide soon. I absolutely do not know what to do next. I really am not sure about what I want. Now that I've gotten to the point where I realize that it's up to me, and only me, to create my future, I am a bit perplexed as to how I want this life of mine to turn o...Expand for more
ut. And that's where I am on 7/12/11. 2007-2008: my life: I partied with no responsibilities for a long time. I got married in my late 30's, had one son, went back to school and became a nyc english /special ed. teacher. i moved out to southampton. my husband died in 2000. i live in southampton with my 17 yr. old son. he's kind of a genius and is nothing like i was at his age. he'll be graduating in june and assumably he'll go away to college. i currently teach special ed at beach channel hs in the rockaways. my married name is milza, which i use. the bad news about my life right now is that i have a very long commute to work. the good news is that i love where i live, have a lot of close friends and i never got fat. for this, and for having a great child, i am very grateful! School for the most part, school sucked. I teach HS and I still think school sucks. College it took me 25 years to finally get a ba.; another 2 yrs to get a masters degree and then i took an additional 30 credits in special education. and, i can still only type by using one finger. Workplace i teach special ed.and ela. i taught for several years at riker's island prison in one of the schools that they have for incarcerated adolescent males. i ran a program for nyc teenagers at phoenix house in easthampton, taught ged in the rockaways and now teach at beach channel hs in rockaway park. I stlii teach at BCHS biut the school is closing and the kids run wild down the halls. Everyone is in a gang. At least I learned that gang members can be nice people too. Military none
