Karen's Story
Life
Born, Chicago, Illinois. Currently works as a computer manager with over 25 years of experience in many and various technologies.
Karen found activism during the 1960s. While attending civil rights marches and other kinds of protests and providing for a small child while a single mother, she also found time to do some folk singing in the Old Town area of Chicago and had an offer to try out for the New Christy Minstrels.
She is still an activist today. While holding down a full-time job, Karen volunteers many hours for the National Space Society. She started as a member of the L5 Society in 1978 but wasnÂt active she was tapped to work on the 1989 International Space Development Conference in Chicago. That spurred her interest and went on to become a member of the NSS Bo...Expand for more
ard of Directors, Vice President for Public Relations, Liaison to the Board of Governors and has held various committee chairs including a stint as a Regional Organizer for the Chapters. She is currently a coordinator for a Chicago suburban Meet-up group.
NSS isnÂt the only non-profit organization that uses KarenÂs talents. She volunteers for a local cat shelter, creates web sites for non-profit groups, does crime statistics for a local police department and has worked as the campaign manager for a candidate for congress.
KarenÂs biggest drawback is that, when she sees that something needs doing, she canÂt say no. And, she says that people shouldnÂt describe themselves as an activist unless they are helping to change the world. If we donÂt make changes, no one else will.
