Karen's Story

Life Hi everybody! I missed the last reunion. I would have enjoyed seeing everyone again but life was a bit chaotic right then....(there was a re-casting...) Kevin and I live in Orlando, are members of the Actor's Equity Association and work for Disney, Universal Studios and Sleuth's Mystery Dinner Theatre. We actually met playing Fred and Wilma Flintstone at Universal. All of the Flintstones and Rubbles had an amazing time working together. We and the Marylins and the Doc Browns, Popeyes and Olives were a little community of actors. We had a great time and were very disapointed when the park lost the Hanna Barbera contract. Then, and in addition to that budget cut, Universal cut the majority of their recognizable atmosphere from the park. It was heartbreaking. Recently guests got to see Boris and Natasha again. We sincerely hope that the company decides to keep them in the park. We do the best we can to keep our schedules and interests in the same park so we can have time together. We obviously have great chemistry! These days, Kevin and I work in entertainment at Magic Kingdom. My daughter Katie wants to perform. I've told her I'd like her to perform brain surgeries first. The stage is a pretty tough place. She's 18 now and majoring in Psychology at UNF. Mama is hopeful!!! I'd love to hear from my high school pals, Chorus and Drama Club pals especially. I miss Wendy B., Richard N. Wendy P. Scott H., Marty N., Robert Tyson, Becky M.T. And I'll probably miss Robert Rivers every day of my life...Thank you for everything. I wonder how drama teacher: Ms. Ellis is doing. I was a "Ms. Ellis" for a while. Thanks Bill. I'm glad you are happy now. Two kids? Congratulations. I miss Mr. Choice. He was brilliant and tough. I went on to work in the music industry in Nashville with college professors and professional vocalists who could have learned a thing or two from Norman Choice. (especially about integrity) My baby sister Natalie was in choir with him, too. (He was much tougher on us, though...tee-hee) I miss doing shows with Bob Gerard and Paul Ferguson. Hi to all fellow cast members who tolerated my bi-polar and overly melodramatic self. School Who was my biggest crush in high school? I was hopeless over Chuck Snipes,(I think Chuck is a pharmacist like his Dad was. Bravo Chuck.) Mel Taylor, and then there was Robert Rivers. He was my first love, first room-mate, first man I wanted to marry, bi-gay-whatever...he was it for me. His accident in 1980 broke my heart. He was a force of nature and my very dear and honest friend. What a loss. Seriously folks...28 years later and I'm tearing up writing about it. I miss you, Robert. What a life you'd have had. I miss weekends driving from one end of HW 90 to the other, talking and planning with best pals: Robert R. Richard N. and Robert T. I miss summer theatre productions with Andrea P., Bob Gerard, Elizabeth W. the Huberts: Michael, Jimmy and Scott. (Jimmy I was hopelessly crushing...Expand for more
on you, too.) I loved the Prince and the Pauper, Dracula!, Dangerous Visions, Oliver! My gosh the memories. And the level of commitment Bob got out of us was amazing. My favorite high school teacher was Ms. Echols. She was the first teacher who ever really made a difference. She was very supportive of my creative writing. She actually read one of my pieces out loud in class. I was so moved and thankful for that recognition. I liked Ms Mitchell's class and Cliff Maxwell convincing our teacher we had goats in the closet. (Baaaa-aaa) I was not the greatest high school student, except for my arts interests and English. I took the GED in fall 1980 and caught up with my classmates at LCCC. I'd like to be remembered as a girl who lived by her own code, and was honest with people;not obsequious or two-faced. I'm sure I'll be remembered as reckless and a risktaker and way too irresponsible. And did somebody suggest: a diva? But I make no apologies and request no do-overs. What's the point? We were living in the moment and we had a great time. And feel free to call me a diva any old time you want to! College: LCCC, FCCJ and Jacksonville University. My real education began in college. College classes were edgy and fun. We could openly discuss everything. No more high school filters and censors. Later college professors Dr. Cieslick, Dr Bodoin, and Dr. Reynolds were fantastic. Theatre professors were great. Thanks to Paul Ferguson and Bob Gerard, you are my mentors and responsible for every good performance I've ever given. I love you. George Ballis, thank you for kicking my ass and kicking me into professional theatre. And later professional directors and teachers: Yvonne Suhor,(thank you for Meisner) Todd Booth, (thanks for not kicking me out of my first Equity show. I was a mess...) Chris Jorie, (for reminding me to trust myself...) and Karen Goode I love you. Thank you for Abigail. I miss: Stacie Cobb, Monique, Matt Hemphill, Andrea Powell, Tra Tracy, Pat Gagliano, all my Alpha Psi Omega pals, I even miss Milt Skelton ! Just kidding Milt. I believe the biggest and best suprise in my life has been the wealth of love and joy I have found in being Katie Gile's mom. And to think that I never thought I was the motherly type. Looking back I see our lives together as an incredible journey of discovery. Katie has been my rudder and we have been each other's navigator. I love watching her now as a freshman in college, weaving her way through her obstacles and making her own choices. She is brave and honest, and fierce! (a 2nd degree black belt!) I am incredibly proud. Also a suprise for many who knew me way back when, was my decision to be a non-drinker. Upon the advice of Katie's dad, I chose to stop drinking in 1996. (I am forever grateful, David G....not many people can really say they count their ex-husbands among their closest friends. I wish you JOY.) Anyway, Stay peaceful one and all. Until I think of more stuff to add.... K.
