Karen's Story
I retired as an HR professional from Mayo Clinic on 12/31/2014 after 30 years of continuous service, first in Rochester, MN; then in metropolitan Phoenix (since 1987). My husband, John Nick, D.V.M., is the founder of Scottsdale Ranch Animal Hospital. We sold the veterinary practice in 2014 to PetVet Care Centers, a corporation, and John then worked on contract part-time there, until officially retiring in November 2020 in anticipation of a kidney transplant (which he ultimately received in September 2021. John and I downsized from our Scottsdale Ranch home to one in NE Phoenix, AZ, (Cave Creek mailing address) in October 2014. We are a Brady Bunch of 6 adult children all in their 40s or 30s, and our 18h grandchild is due in 12/2022. (We are also technically great-grandparents as of 2022!) We have a fawn-colored French Bulldog named Fawnzie -- "Ayyyyy!" (a la Happy Days--LOL!). I am in two book groups, joined a local chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution (a service organization) in 12/2020, after discovering a Revolutionary War patriot while ...Expand for more
working on my family tree during the pandemic. I am active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, having converted from my Lutheran faith in high school. John and I love to travel together, though the combination of his immunosuppression and COVID-19 have cramped our style! We have been told by John's transplant nephrologists that cruising (both ocean and river) is strongly discouraged, so that was a gut punch to both of us, as we had to cancel a Norway and Iceland cruise scheduled June 2022. Therefore, we are instead planning a 4-person barge canal cruise with John's identical twin and wife (who live in Dallas) in the south of France during 2022...extended by some time on land in Paris, France, and Switzerland on one end or other of the vacation. We also are spending a bit of our summer in a pet-friendly VRBO rental home in Rochester, MN, to be closer to some of our family in MN as well as the Rochester Mayo Clinic campus, as John's got a "Mayo Clinic dependency"! (LOL!). Anyway, MN is lots cooler than metropolitan Phoenix in the summertime!
