Karen's Story
Life
After High School I attended LCCC for two years and then moved on to Kutztown U. After Kutztown I went to work for BFI Waste Systems in Allentown. I started with them as a receptionist/payroll clerk and took advantage of all the educational opportunities the company provided. For the next 13 years I worked in Hunterdon County, NJ, Wilmington, DE, Philadelphia & West Grove, PA, and Frederick/Hagerstown, MD as an Environmental, Safety & Health Manager. From 1995-2003 was the Operations Mgr at the BFI locations in Hagerstown, MD and the Northern VA locations.
In 2004 I left BFI and moved to OH to accept a job with Leonard Truck & Trailer, a company that focuses on horse trailer sales as well as many types of equipment trailers.

Philadelphia to Damascus, MD to train 2X a week and show on weekends. My show schedule keeps me on the road a lot - I was at a horse show 38 weekends in 1999! - but I love the travel and all the great people I've met across the country. I've won two world championships ('95 & '99) and currently listed in the top 100 non pros competing in National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) events. Injuries limited my showing in '00 (me) & '02 (my horse), but I'm ready to head down the road in '03.
I began writing for several equine publications in 1995 and have enjoyed a free lance writing career for the last seven years. I write two monthly columns for the NRHA Reiner, several features and cover most major equine events. My stories are regularly published in six domestic magazines and two foreign publications (Italy & Germany). Somehow I think this justifies my hectic show and travel schedule!
