Karen's Story
Life
Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago. Worked at All-Sign Corp., then the Buick Division of GM. Married and moved to Des Plaines, Ill., did volunteer work at Lutheran General Hospital. Had 2 children, a boy and a girl. Bought a Buick dealership, moved to Oak Brook and renewed my interest in government. Began on the Plan Commission in 1976, elected Trustee in 1985, elected Mayor in 1991 and retired from that job in May, 2003. Areas of special interest are Emergency Management and Disaster Mitigation. Have done a lot of speaking in the region on the subject, served on the DuPage County Emergency Management Committee, concerned with Terrorism and Weapons of Mass Destruction. ldren are now grown and married and my grandchildren are the best gift God ever gave a Grandma. I'm involved in my new church, and live for my family. I enjoy doing all of my own yard work, and have been remodeling my house for the last 5 years...almost done and it is beautiful, especially hearing the laughter and general noise coming from the playroom when my sister's 12 grandchildren are here playing too. Currently employed as a Managing Director at The PrivateBank and Trust Co. Hobby that consumes me is Scrapbooking, but I still love needlepoint, too, and would love to get back to quilting...but for now, Scrapbooking is the "fun" thing to do, especially old family pictures, and pictures of those wonderful years at Calumet!
