Karen's Story

Ok, so I'm still not living on my own farm, yet. I've lived on a horse farm, one of the best perks of working with race horses. I've almost always had cats. (I'm still not old enough to have kids.) I have an old tom cat who will be 21 years old 10/11/08. I have a pit bull who will be 6 on 11/1/08; and my pit has raised her own cat. He was a lost kitten from a neighbor who feeds strays. My dog had to pull him out of the bushes because the kitten would not let me near him. The kitten, Tim, was just 4 weeks old, and starving! Tim just turned 3 on 10/27/08. In 2004 I was rear ended by an SUV while riding my motorcycle home from work. My beautiful 1100cc Honda Shadow was totaled; I hobbled to the ambulance on my own 2 feet, slowly. Probably the longest 45 feet I ever walked. Nothing broken (damage on leg from foot peg not included), just pulled, strained, or sprained almost every muscle I have. Still have three small lumps, and I get stiff if I sit too long. My pit, Remy, proved to be a natural born therapy dog. I never had to call her or give her instructions, not even ¿sit.¿ I used her as leverage so I could sit-up without human help. So my husband, Derek, never had to take time off to care for me. (He did take that first night off. Yes, I married a vampire, he works nights.) I now have a small motorcycle, a Suzuki 800cc Intruder. I really need to get a bigger bike. I have a ¿Mountain¿ bike that I¿ve only ridden a few times. When the weather is bad, I have a cute little car. I don¿t ride the bicycle much because my shoulders and wrists still get numb, even with the front fork shock absorber. I¿m a wimp. Deal with it. I¿ve hiked the trails of most of the Indiana State parks, that have a lodge, enough times that I could give tours. I¿ve hiked, with Remy, the local trails enough that I know where and when to chase frogs, pick blackberries, or watch Sand Hill Cranes, and Herons (blue and green). The little black bird with the skunk like stripes really is a stinker. They actually disappear when you get out your camera! Known as the Yellow Headed Black bird, their song goes on for at least a minute, longer if...Expand for more
they decide to repeat. I¿ve had a variety of jobs. From horse farms to ITT Technical Institute. From a Greyhound farm, to a law firm. Titles range from groom, file clerk, and goat herd, to profiling, data entry and executive receptionist. Sheep stink a lot worse than goats. I love riding out to meet for lunch, but prefer to have someone I trust behind me (I wonder why?). Group rides are great, if the group is small. Even better is to meet at a trail head and take a hike. There¿s a great lunch spot along the Fox River that will give you pieces of old bread to toss to the ducks and fish while you eat. I took a photo that looks like a Mallard is standing on a Carp that is as big as the duck. After raising ducks, I believe the fish would weigh more than the duck. I¿ve had great success with shrubbery and trees. Apparently I planted a pair of Paw paw trees at just the right distance from each other that I should be able to hang a hammock between them in a few years. I keep trying new flowers, I may try Sunflowers and Nasturtiums again, but mostly I plant things that keep coming back. Crocuses, Irises, Roses, Siberian Bug Loss and Tiger Lilies do well, but they're not edible. Vegetables hate me. Except for tomatoes, they¿ll grow for me. A friend who grows tomatoes on the roof of her apartment building gives me her extras every summer. Hers always taste better than mine, so I quit trying to grow vegetables. Besides, I don¿t like bugs or weeding. Trees are so easy. That¿s quite a ramble, but then it¿s been a long time since High School. (:o) I¿m making plans to ¿retire¿ to a small farm. Very small, just three to five acres. I know what I want so I can have both an income and stuff to barter or trade. (I¿ll trade two pies worth of cherries and half dozen eggs for green beans, onions and tomatoes. Did I mention that vegetables hate me?) My mom¿s huge garden (which harbored some of the scariest bugs on earth!) spoiled me for store bought produce. Maybe I¿ll plant some Rhubarb this spring. I¿d love to have chickens and ducks again. They eat more bugs that you can imagine, and are terrific stress relief.
