Karen L's Story

I always felt so ugly in high school. After high school I had a complete make over and learned how to put on make up. My father taught me all survival skills so I could take care of myself. I never thought any of what my father taught me would be helpful in my career dealing with 800 crazy maximum security prison inmates. Working in the prison system as an officer was challenging and I was never bored. My dad and mom were always so proud of me and so supportive. The past seventeen years without them has been so hard. They died within 3 months of each other and I was devastated. I was married for 17 years and was extremely unhappy. Never give up your dreams for anyone else, no matter what I did it was not good enough he would promise I could go back to school but when that time came he always had a reason that I couldn't. I got so tired of feeling cheated and like "is this all there is"? So I took my kids and walked. Years later I met my second husband Steve he is almost 15 years older than me. I tried to run him off but he stuck with me. He is the best man I have ever met. We just celebrated our 19th anniversary. I enjoy traveling, I will hop on a plane in a hot minute! One of the first things I did was get a passport. I met my son in Germany when he took his R & R from his deployment to Afgh...Expand for more
anistan from 18 months with Gen. Karl Eikenberry as protective service detail. Germany is beautiful and clean and I could live there. The people are nice and friendly. I flew to Japan for the birth of my grand daughter. I stayed a month and enjoyed my family, but Japan was too crowded and my son and I were the tallest and stood out. Japan was just too different for my taste. I ended up in SC, I was amazed that you could ride bicycles on the beach here because growing up you certainly could not do that at pensacola beach. Also, the beach is a brownish gray. Florida has the most beautiful beaches. I taught my daughters that you never need a man to define who you are. To look for someone who can be your friend and your lover and still respect you. I enjoy my grandchildren, Conner is 16 years old and the oldest. Alexis is 15 and my son just got stationed to Fort Belvoir VA, The youngest is Owen at 13 years old. My youngest daughter Diana is in Wilsonville Oregon and has gotten her license as an Art Therapist to help at a Native American Boarding School. Her and her husband have a fur baby named Bodahbear! These little monsters are my heart, all are different and so cool to hang with. They all love Nana unconditionally which is so wonderful. I have retired from Corrections, and enjoy traveling.
