Karen's Story
I am Karen Elizabeth Palmer, and I was graduated from Midland High School in 1960. After that I attended and was graduated from Austin College where I studied chemistry and history, if you will pardon the odd combination. After college, I was married and later divorced. I moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1966 where my parents lived, and my father worked as an engineer at the Nevada Test Site. Eventually they moved away, but I stayed having remarried. I was a Financial Aid Counselor at UNLV, and prior to that, worked at the Unlv switchboard while pursuing my MA. Never got the MA, but this started my career with the State of Nevada.
After my UNLV experience I accepted a position as an Eligibility Certification Specialist with the State of Nevada's Welfare Division, was promoted to Supervisor, and later to a District Office Manager in the Henderson office. After a number of years administering all the Division's programs for that office that included the benefit programs ( welfare and Food Stamps) and the social service programs including adoptions, foster home licensing, protective services for children and adults, and Medicaid, I was promoted to Social Welfare Manager at a much larger district in Las Vegas. I retired in 1997. Since then, I have had a number of "keep busy" jobs, but no new career plans. I love not having hitch myself to a wagon every day, not carrying a cell phone, and living as a retired person. It's great, and i was fortunate to be able to reti...Expand for more
re relatively young.
I married a second time during my career, divorced, and finally got it right with my husband John at our marriage in 1983. We have no children, and my only child died when he was only 15 mo. old, very long ago. I kept my birth name "Palmer" after marriage due to personal convictions.
John and I live in Henderson in the Green Valley area, and we hardly ever go to the Strip! Been there, done that, bought the T-shirt, then decided to go down a quieter path.
Our interests are camping, reading, watching public TV documentaries, and hanging out with neighbors and friends. There is a lot to do here, lots of things to see, but the heat and dryness make me want to move again. Maybe next year!
Many of my family members still live in Texas, but I have no family remaining here. John's from a large extended family, and his parents homesteaded in Northern Nevada after WWII.
My posted photo is my passport picture made in 2005. I don't look much different, just older (70 yrs. last April.)
In all, I can't say I loved MIdland Texas very much, but I am grateful for having the opportunity to go to MHS and take chemistry, physics, and math there. I was in the band there, too, and I am proud of being a nerd.
That's about it for me, lots of stories and experiences since 1960 as all of us have had and treasure.
I always wanted to be a engineer when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were right!.
