Karen's Story

I spent a couple of semesters at YVC where I met my husband and we moved out of state for him to attend college. We moved back to the NW where we both worked and lived for almost 20 years We had 4 sons,(one set of twins). Finally,we both grew tired of wet feet and snowy winters and came to The Great State Texas in 1989. Threw away the snow shovels, the boots and heavy coats! At one time in our lives, we had 3 kids in college at the same time. What a financial drain! I worked at the public elementary and high schools managing the kitchen. I was known as "The Lunch Lady"! That's right..The Lunch Lady. Moved to the Preschool setting later on. Gotta love the 3 year olds! In 1997,our oldest son, Dylan, was killed in a Golden Gloves boxing tournament. He was 19 years old and attending Southwestern University. We will never recover from this loss. People don't usually talk about Dylan or mention our loss, I think because it makes them feel ...Expand for more
uncomfortable. But, I enjoy telling everyone about Dylan and what a great son he was. I will always remember how happy he always was. When you asked him about his day....it was always "Great!". Our other boys are grown now and lucky for us, they don't live too far away, so we keep in close touch. We have one grandchild who will be 4 years old in October....he is a joy. Our dog Max (170 lb. Great Dane), and our pet Swan, Lynn, keep us entertained now that we are "empty nesters". We would like to travel more someday after Karl retires...think we'll go to Galveston, where one of ours sons lives, and spend some time on the Gulf fishing. My mother passed away last May at the age of 95. I had taken care of her for years and she is definitely missed in our family. I work with Child Protective Services here in Round Rock as a CASA volunteer and it is a very rewarding job. Between my grandson and my CASA assignment, I am quite busy these days.
