Karl's Story

I am, have been living in Texas since 1977. I started out in high school in Fairfax, Va in 1966, moved to NJ in 1967 attending SRHS in the fall until Oct 1969. Then I moved back to Va attending HHS (above) from 11/1/69 through graduation in May (gee, or was it June ) 1970. Went to GMU after graduating HHS. After graduating GMU I moved down here and have lived in a variety of places in Texas since. Went to SMU (Southern Methodist University) for 2 semesters in Fine Arts, radio,tv film. Kind of a throwback to the television crew at SRHS program that Mr Waters came up with when the School acquired some TV cameras. I had a broken leg in a full cast at the time so was unable to participate. I always thought it would be cool to be able to do those kinds of things that we planned to do when I did attend the 1st meetings of the TV program that Mr Waters had initiated. I think the worst job I have had over all has been working for the Dept of Human Services, ie Welfare, determining eligibility for Food Stamps, Medicaid and TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families). This is worst because for 10 years I dealt with generally the same people over and over again, who never seemed to understand that to get along better they needed to find and keep a job of some nature for longer than a few weeks or months so that they could start contributing and get on their feet. They continued to basically live off the dole. I had some folks come in apply, take advantage of the programs and find something to get them on their feet and I never saw them again. Then there were the chronic Food Stamp applicants. The people who would apply, never provide the requested information so that their eligibility could be determined and be denied, only to come back in 60 days later, re-apply and be denied for the same reasons. This would go on over and over. One family had jobs for pay and tips, but would never provide verification of how much they were making. They would c...Expand for more
ome in complaining about how little they made and needed the Food Stamps. However, they never decided to go do anything else (get different jobs, get maybe additional jobs) to overcome the shortage and get on their feet. This went over and over again, but they never got it. They are probably still going through the cycle 7 years after I left there. I was a Private Eye for a short period of time early after moving to Texas. I have to tell you that had to be the most boring job I have ever had. PI-ing is not the Rockford Files, Simon & Simon nor Magnum PI. What you see on TV is just not the way it really is. Long Tedius hours of sitting watching for someone to come out of a bldg and leave so ya can follow them and hopefully not be spotted. I never had cases where I took pictures thru windows to catch cheating spouses thankfully. And we did not carry guns. No chasing people and drawing down on them or firing shots, nor gun fights. It just did not happen. In the mean time I have been married and divorced, married again. I have a daughter 19 now who is in college, who is one of if not the sharpest person I know. Extremely proud of her. She has a clue and is willing to ask questions if she does not understand something rather than go along ignorant and doing nothing about correcting it. She's really sharp, Dean's List and all of that. Would that I had been as sharp as that at her age. Maybe I would have been doing other things and enjoying myself more than I have in the past. Not that I have not been enjoying myself. Just like everyone else there are things that I could have and possibly would have done differently. But I'm not complaining. I have done what I have done and go on from there. Been to Europe a few times. Recently visited Pompeii and Herculaneum. Climbed Mt Vesuvius. Been to St. Petersburg, Russia. After having seen all the gold statuary, fountains, palaces and the like, I can understand why there was a Revolution in 1917.
