Karla's Story

It's hard to put forty some odd years into a few paragraphs but here goes. After high school, I went to college then graduate school. I taught Home Economics (grades 7-12 and community college) for seven or so years in Pennsylvania before leaving to open my first restaurant in Princeton, N.J. It was called "Cafe au Lait" and was desserts, only, plus fancy coffees and teas - long before Starbucks. It did well. Then I opened a health food restaurant. In 1983, I married Tony Seidita and we just celebrated our twenty fifth anniversary. Along the way I had a best selling cook book (Just Desserts) that sold 150,000 copies and was featured on QVC shopping network. I was also featured on "Working Woman" a national TV program. Perhaps you saw it. After moving to the Washington, DC area, I opened a wholesale cheesecake bakery in Virginia. It was the first of it's kind. ...Expand for more
Unlike NY & NJ where cheesecake is a staple, cheesecake in the DC area was relatively unknown. I retired from business about three years ago after twenty years in the wholesale cheesecake business. Tony and I now own a farm in rural Fauquier County, VA (about 50 miles south of Washington, DC) which we're developing as a BB&B (Bed, Barn and Breakfast) to open September 2008. Our BB&B is called "Cheesecake Farms" (what else?) and we're hoping to attract guests who want to get away from the hustle-bustle to relax on a farm. We'll have cooking and gardening classes. Dogs, cats and children are welcome. BYOH (Bring your own horse). In addition, for the past ten years I've been the Food and Life Style writer for The Fauquier Times Democrat Newspaper. I won awards for my columns and features on foods, health and gardening. Please contact me, I'd love to stay in touch.
