Karla's Story
Life
I have 3 sons: Adam, 43, an art teacher, Christopher, 41, an audio engineer who tours with major rock groups & Matthew, 39, a manager of a worldwide company. I have 4 grandchildren (16, 14, 12 and 1 1/2. .I love being a grandmother and spend a great deal of time with them...... I've traveled extensively since retiring. I hiked the Portuguese Camino (200 miles) to Santiago, Spain in 8 days in Oct. 2019...... My 3 sons and I traveled to Peru in 2016 to see Machu Picchu. (Make sure that you've got that on your 'bucket list.' It was absolutely the best vacation I've ever been on.) .... I stood in awe while viewing the Terracotta Warriors while in China in 2015. And after visiting so many cities there, I realized just how blessed and fortunate Americans are..... I still love animals. I had Great Danes for 35 years but, sadly, lost both this a year ago. I now have a 2 yr. old rescue Golden Retriever, 1 rescue cat and a Cockatiel....,. I'm very passionate about the Iditarod (Alaskan dogsled race) and have traveled to Alaska 4 times. I was in the ceremonial start as a dog handler for musher Bruce Linton in 2009. (One more thing crossed off on my bucket list.!)....
I 've been widowed for 22 yrs. now...... I spend a great deal of time in the Canadia...Expand for more
n wilderness (150 miles north of Toronto). I had my grandparents cottage winterized to accommodate the -40 F. winter temperatures and 4+ ft. of snow. It's our family's retreat in all seasons with a lake 100 ft. from the deck , with woods on both sides and a huge field in back. (And the nightly bears, We also hear wolves howl at night). We all enjoy ATVing, snowmobiling, jet skiing, kayaking, boating and cross country skiing. It's a place where I never feel my age - I just don't go as fast as my sons do on my ATV. LOL!
School
Mr. Cawley inspired me daily and I still have a fond memory of his English classes.....craziest school memories - I cut a lot in my Senior year and never got caught..... cutting and going down to the Metro Parks to meet up with friends.... and some memories I'll take to my grave!...lol
Workplace
I taught severe behavior(SBH) high school kids in Cleveland at East Tech High School (2001-2015) and John Marshall High School (1989-1999). I also taught at the Cuyahoga County Detention Center (1999-2001). I began teaching Special Needs students in 1972. I was a stay-at-home-mom for 8 years then returned to teaching. I've been retired now for 8 years but find that retirement is easy; it's missing the kids that is hard.
