Karyn's Story

Life I still do a lot of quilting and counted cross stitch as I can, and any other craft that strikes my fancy. I also spend time on my computer, chatting on y. or windows messengers, or emailing friends around the world. Or, I play sudoku, or scrabble or monopoly with friends online. Lately, I've been doing a fair amount of blogging on y360 and some on LiveJournal. And I post on the Fathom message board. Our son Kenneth, 25, is now out of the AF and in the AF Reserves and loving it. On Feb 1, '08 he graduated from Intelligence School at Goodfellow AFB, San Angelo, Tx and is now working with a Reserve unit up in Ft. Worth, when he isn't home here and looking for a full time gig. Our daughter Lacey, 23, is still in the Army, but being a mailroom clerk even though her MOS is Combat Medic. How's that for Military Logic? And people wonder why I say ML is an oxymoron. Mel is no longer working at Swift's driving academy, and is back over the road again, this time working for Allon Transportation. He loves it, but I do miss him a lot. In our spare time Mel and I go to Dutch Oven Gatherings around Tx, Mel is an accomplished cook and I'm a good helper/decent cook. Or we go up to our land on the north side of Canyon Lake and cuss and discuss just how to situate the house we'll build there. I do have some health challenges now that are affecting my lifestyle somewhat. I was diagnosed with Sjogren's Syndrome in '03. The osteoarthritis that started in high school has progressed, of course. The damage to my lower spine from the car accident in '01 is irreparable they tell me, so no more bungee jumping for me. Oh, wait. I never did that, so that's ok. :) A dead thyroid and a few more minor things and you have the gist. The docs keep telling me I'm healthy, all things considered, so I just keep smiling. And I am still planning on living to 90 or 100. Too much to do down here, God, ok? The most recent setback though is that I had surgery on Mar. 28, '08 to correct 2 hammertoes on my left foot. Still can only walk on the heel, which is not easy, but this too shall pass....Expand for more
What have I done with the last 25+ years? Mostly raise our two kids and follow Mel around in his Air Force career. Which means sit here in SA while he got to go to Ankara, Turkey. Then up to Offutt AFB, Ne (Omaha). Then back here to Kelly AFB (we lived on Laurel Valley). Up to Ft Sam Houston for 7 years, lived on post. Then, instead of us getting to see somewhere new, they send him.... you guessed it, back to Omaha. When he was forced into early retirement (20 years, yes, but he didn't want to get out then) Mel asked me if I wanted to stay in the cold in Omaha or come back to SA. So, here we are, in SA of course. (arthritis and cold are not a good mix) We now own a house in Valley Forest, and have lived here since '97. For the past year I've been president of PWOC (protestant women of the chapel), serving on Parish Council, treasurer now editor of the newsletter of Save West Campus, and for the past 5+ yrs active in our neighborhood assoc. (currently in charge of Yard of the Month). *WHEW!* I have GOT to learn to say no, and delegate, Mel keeps telling me. LOL.... God is a truly Awesome God. I am alive today because of Him. I mean that literally, not just spiritually and figuratively. He has blessed me and mine with more blessings than I ever dreamed of. The health challenges I have, have taught me compassion, patience, caring, and to appreciate each and every day. And every time I get down and start to feel sorry for myself, He puts someone in my path that is much worse off than I am, to remind me that things are never really all that bad. I am a very blessed woman indeed; and pain is only a reminder that I am alive, that I can feel. Now to get my family and friends to stop with the chocolates already. I mean, really. I'm supposed to be a recovering chocoholic, remember? It's not like I've been going to the gym and exercising for the past 3 wks after all. Noooo.... just laying around in my recliner, reading and watching tv til I'm ready to scream.... *glaring at my foot* Hurry up and heal, wouldja?! Be well, stay safe, take care of one another.
