Kathe's Story
Life
After graduating from IHS, attended TCCC for a semester. Participated in a study-abroad program in London. After the semester was over, went traveling to France, Italy, Greece. Ended up starting a sailing life in Greece. Lived aboard a 33 ft yacht in the Mediterranean for about 3 years, spending time in Greece, Italy, Portugal, Gibralter, Sicily, Tunisia, Madeira. Crossed the Atlantic in '83 - a horrible passage. We were becalmed for much of the voyage and it took 43 days - supposed to take less then a month. Anyway, lived in Puerto Rico for about a year, and then crewed aboard charter yachts in the Caribbean for a while. Moved back to Ithaca and gained more traditional employment for a couple of years. Married in '88 and bought a house on Utica Street. Went back to college in '90 (since my education path was disrupted by taking up the sailing life) and graduated from Ithaca College in '93 cumma sum laude. Took up swing dancing in '92 and riding motorcycles in '93. Divorced in '95. Became a certified motorcycle safety instructor through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation in '97. Moved to North Carolina from Ithaca in 2000. I now work at Duke University as an a...Expand for more
ssistant to an Assistant Vice President in HR.
Remarried a couple years ago to M. Peter Kaufman, a retired oral surgeon from Ithaca. Some of you might have had your wisdom teeth removed by him.
I still swing dance, and I still teach motorcycle safety courses here in North Carolina. I teach for the state through the community college system as well as for Harley as a Rider's Edge instructor. I very much enjoy teaching; I like being part of helping people achieve their dreams/goals.
These days, I ride a 2005 Harley-Davidson Sporter Low. I love the bike but regret selling my Suzuki SV650. Some women collect shoes; I collect motorcycles. I've owned Honda's, Suzuki's, Harley's, and BMW's. One of the best experiences I've ever had was doing a track day at Virginia International Raceway. I do like going fast, but I keep it on the track; not on public highways.
I have no children, but I have 5 wonderful grandchildren. (I love being a grandmother. I get to spoil them, fill 'em up with surgar, and then send them home to their parents.)
My newest hobby is scuba diving. I just became certified in July 2007. We've a cruise coming up in March 2007 and I can't wait.
