Kathe's Story

I've been incredibly lucky in my life. Highlights: *I went straight to Chico State where I majored in Upper Bidwell Park, wildflowers, birds and natural hisotry of any type (officially biology). I met my husband, John Hendrickson, when we were freshmen. I loved the college, small town atmosphere, Bidwell Park, slower pace of life, near-by wilderness and friends met there. (and John too!) *After getting my teaching credential I started as a naturalist/teacher at Woodleaf Outdoor School in the northern Sierra Nevada in spring of 1974. My husband and I built the residential environmental education program and ran it for 35 years. It was the best job in the world if you love being outside in nature and working with kids. It was not only our job, but our passion. *Since we closed during the snowy season and summer vacation, we also led backpack trips for kids, as well as canoeing, hiking and backpack trips for adults in most of the western states, Florida, Canada, New Zealand and Costa Rica. I also taught the gifted and talented program in our district and worked as a science consultant for many schools part time. *We had two children born in 1982 and 1984. Our son, Josh, is in his last year of law school at McGeorge in Sacramento after graduating with a double major and high honors from Chico. Our daughter, Heidi, got her BA and teaching credential at UC Santa Barbara and is now teaching at a bilingual, environmental eduation school in Costa Rica. We couldn't be any p...Expand for more
rouder or more pleased with them. They are both kind, considerate and loving people. *My husband doubled as a nature photogrpaher during his off seasons from Woodleaf and now does it full time in retirement. You can see his work on the cover and insides of the Sierra Club engagement calendar 2008 as well as in many books, magazines, exhibits and calendars. He also leads photo trips and teaches photography and is currently one of the top three photographers in the ICF Nature Photographer's Pro-tour. *I still do consultant work in environmental eduation and write EE and science curriculum as well as teach in an Opportunity Program for 7th, 8th and 9th grade students that can't make it in a regular classroom and need some redirection in their lives. *I hope to do more consultant work and curriculum writing as my time frees up in the future. I have enjoyed writing curriculum for many agencies including National Parks, museums, school districts, Woodleaf OS and the Whale Conservation Institute. *I was able to work part time as our kids were growing up, which wasn't great for retirement, but perfect for raising kids. I still have a bit of time left before retirement! I then hope to lead more trips and travel to all those exotic and bird filled locations that I haven't been able to get to yet. *I would enjoy hearing from all of you that I haven't seen in the last 40 years. Please give me an update if you are so inclined. I look forward to hearing what you have been up to.
