Kathy's Story

Life Hi. I am still in the area where I was reared and consider myself to be lucky for many reasons. I am the English Department "chair" at a family-owned after-school Enrichment Center 5 min. from my condo. Believe it or not (?), I live alone with my companion birds, Charlie and Lucy. I write poetry and am getting back into my music (guitar and keyboard, tho not at the same time...yet?) My mother passed away in 1972 while I was living and working in Yosemite, backpacking, writing poetry, playing my guitar, and taking pictures. I doubt she could understand why I was not pursuing a teaching career more aggressively after graduating from Berkeley. After many relationships and experiences and losses, I was able to find a niche of sorts back in L.A., first as an office temp, then as a substitute teacher, then as an ESL instructor during the Amnesty program. It seemed like whenever I found a position I liked as a teacher of sorts, the funding got cut, so I worked as a sub for many of the local school districts and found it not only challenging much of the time but impossible (to control behavior) most of the time. My father followed my mother 20 years later, so I returned to Fullerton College to learn the computer and started studying law during the O.J. trial. I eventually attained a degree in Paralegal Studies, but found tutoring t...Expand for more
o be more a calling. I have added a second part-time job as a reader/scorer for what is being called the "Utah project", working at home for Pearson Educational, the same company that scores the essays for the SAT. I am now also an English teacher/tutor (writing) for a Chinese tutoring center in San Gabriel and will teach an SAT 1 class on Sundays this summer.Monthly hikes at Mt. Baldy have fallen off due to the passing of my hiking partner, but are now replaced by weekly dancing, and I have found a local venue with many creative people. I still have some of the poems our little group of budding poets shared during lunchtime at Grant, and was in the local Borders poetry writers workshop. Eventually I shall put together a book of poems and photographs, but first I must organize!! I am still struggling with health problems, especially challenging alone, but I do treasure my solitude and privacy, after four failed "significant others" (actually three significant and one "insignificant") situations. Live and Learn, I always say! Let me hear from you.I remember so many of you and the great days we had in our youth! Former Promethean Historian, Kathy (Remember "Don't Be a Schnook, Vote for Cook"? ha ha) P.S. Anyone going to a 45th reunion from this area? Or are we waiting for the 50th. wishing you all health and happiness and peace.
