Katherine's Story

Life After graduating from Highlands High School in 1976, I attended Incarnate Word College on a partial scholarship from the Junior Miss Pageant. At the time Incarnate Word was known mostly as a good Catholic nursing school or that nice girl's college across the street from Earl Abel's on Broadway. I graduated with a B.A. in Sociology and Religious Studies and a minor in Philosophy. I became married later that year at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. My husband (John Jay HS in San Antonio and Texas A&M University) was in the Air Force. We moved to Virginia where he was stationed at Langley AFB and I attended law school at William & Mary. I loved living in Virginia, especially Williamsburg. I have worked as a school teacher (teaching first grade in Catholic School) while studying for the bar, then as a PI attorney and an appellate attorney in San Antonio. I worked for a small civil litigation firm in Austin - my youngest child would go to work with me when he was a baby. I would like to get into child advocacy and am working on a mediation certificate. I now live in the Beautiful Texas Hill Country on Onion Creek with children, horses, cats and dogs. Actually, only one child is still living at home, and my father-in-law also lives with us. The dogs sometimes dig up wild onions just to remind me that we are on Onion Creek! I wonder if there is any money in being able to locate and dig up wild onions? We live across the creek from The Salt Lick and can often hear music from there, as well smell the barbecue when we are outside. My oldest son Sam is in Boston completing his degree in creative writing with a poetry concentration. Finally! He changed majors which put him on the 6 year plan. He is working for The Dig (alternative newspaper) as well as at the art library. He still has plans to become a "guybrarian" and is thinking about graduate school. I'm sure he w...Expand for more
ill stay in Boston - his WIFE! is a librarian for Brandeis University. My daughter Marisa graduated from the Fine Arts Academy (violin) and is now home from Connecticut College, working at Starbucks and picking up gigs. She is learning music production and hopes to be on both sides of the production booth. Cristina graduated from Dripping Springs High School and is majoring in Equine Facilitated Therapeutics at Wilson College in Pennsylvania. Sometimes it seems that she is majoring in photography, as those photography courses take a lot of her time. Gabriel is now in high school at the Science Academy in Austin. My husband is retired but has what appears to be a full time job caring for his 91 year old father. and I am thinking about a new career in, well, haven't figured it out yet. Some stuff about me: I don't cook, ever. I can make a smoothie and break & bake cookies. My husband finds it hilarious that I won the Betty Crocker award in high school. I wildscaped our property for birds and butterflies and get excited about the barn swallows and purple martins coming ever year. This past spring I chronicled the cycle of a nest of barn swallows with photos on my photo blog, Drifting & Dreaming. I am a deadhead. My husband's ringtone for me is Ripple and my son created a calligraphy of the song Ripple for me. I love gardening, which surprises about everyone I know. I was a professional clown when I was law school. I also worked at Busch Gardens (The Old Country) when I was in law school. I named one of my daughters after a colonial tavern in Williamsburg, Christiana Campbells where I learned to love hot buttered rum during the snowy Williamsburg winters. I never wear high heels, even though I am short. Hmm, maybe I should learn to adapt. I attend Little League baseball games for fun, even though my own children no longer play. I am a HUGE fan of gypsy jazz guitar.

Night is for sorrow and dawn is for joy,
Chasing the troubles that fret and annoy;
Darkness for sighing and daylight for song,—
Cheery and chaste the strain, heartfelt and strong.
