Kathleen's Story

Life I was born on the Fort Ord, Monterey County military base and grew up in Atascadero. My parents still live in the same house that I grew up in and I was never more than 3 miles away. Most of my 8 brothers and sisters live in the area, but at least the others are in California. We get together every so often to celebrate birthdays, weddings, anniversaries or graduations. After 44 years of thinking there is no greater place in the world to live than Atascadero, I moved to SLO and am loving it. I have my own place for the first time in my life and it's great. Everything is close by, including work, and the weather is great. I worked at Wilkins Printing for fifteen years. At age 30, I quit working for a year, then became a teacher's aide at Santa Rosa elementary. I loved being around my kids and their classmates every day. I went on all their field trips, helped in their classrooms, and was totally involved in the PTA, going to 4 state conventions. I was a 'team mom' for at least 30 rec sports teams while my children were growing up. When my youngest became part of a travel softball team, we went all over the country together with our second family, The Central CA Cruisers. When the kids got to high school, I got into Boosters and had a lot of fun planning fundraisers and selling memberships. The sports program is what helped my kids get through high school and I enjoyed every second of it. Jayne played volleyball, soccer and softball; Andrew played football, baseball, soccer and wrestling; Rebecca played soccer and softball. Now the kids are in co...Expand for more
llege and working, so I just visit them a lot and cook dinners for them. I also still get asked to read over their essays and help them make out their schedules ... Back to my working career -- I was a reporter for the Atascadero News for three years and it was a blast. But after Bill and I separated, I had to look for more practical work. So for two years I was employed by the Women's Shelter and recently got hired by the County of SLO. I hope to be able to retire by the time I'm 70. Oh yeah, and last year I was an official paid scorekeeper for the City's rec softball program. Community is important to me, so I volunteer with the Women's Shelter and Atascadero Colony Days right now. I also belong to the Art Assn and a photo club. In the meantime, my immediate goals are to take every art class offered at Cuesta and visit all of the art galleries on the Central Coast. Lots of artwork is displayed in wineries, so that's just a bonus. There are lots of places around the county that I want to explore in the great outdoors, so that's what I do it my spare time, taking pictures along the way. I entered some photos in the fair this year, so if you go, look for them. And if you see me, say 'hi.' PS - UPDATE: I have a new beau, who has a 13-year old son. Life is ever-changing and fantastically challenging. I am really looking forward to the next chapter! Update 2007: I live in Los Osos now with my boyfriend, Lee Ames. He graduated same year (1977) as us from San Marcos High in Santa Barbara. He's a great guy and life is good! See you at the next reunion!
