More about Kathleen:"Just trying to be the change. I have six kids. PJ and Joey are 22. Both of them moved away, one to So Cal, and one to SF Bay Area, and both are back now, and working toward nursing school, and eventually med school. Sari, 19 was studying in Germany last year. I'm so glad she's home I missed her so much! The other three, Sydney 16(different last name, since she's adopted and prefers to keep the one she's used to- although that doesn't stop me from yelling, "Sydney Smith!" when I'm mad), Evie 15, and Sean 14 are homeschooled. I'm back at school. I'm a psychology major at Chico State. I'll be there a long while, since I have to go for my masters to become a therapist. I feel like I should add why. Ben and I have had a lot of kids through our household, some have lived with us, some have schooled with us, and I've been full-time taking care of them, but of course a good parent will work their way out of a job. One morning during our regular coffee time, I was talking to Ben about my assumption that we would adopt more kids out of foster care. His response was so funny. He said, "Some day I want to be done. Some day I want to put something down." And at that point he firmly set his cup down to illustrate, "And have it still be there when I get back." So then I had to think about what my next life stage would entail. I still wanted to do some good, and I can't even imagine not trying to make things better for kids. It wasn't too long that I realized I should go back to school to get my therapy license, so I can work with troubled teens during the da...Expand for more
y, and come home at night to finding whatever I put on the table in the morning still there! And my education has taken an exciting turn. Last spring one of my professors nominated me for honors in Psychology. What that means is that even as an undergrad, you do a year-long research project similar to what grad students do. I'm researching electronic sexual behavior (ya sexting). It's at times terrifying and at times thrilling. I have enjoyed it so much though, that I'm pretty sure I'm not going to stop at my masters, but go ahead and get the Phd, so that I can continue to do research. I will slow down though, because I do want to get out there after my masters. I love that Ben and the kids have been so supportive, even though I know the extra time and money it takes isn't always so easy on the family. When I told Ben I wanted to go for the PhD, all he said was, "my wife Dr. Smith". He's behind me and proud of me. Isn't that cool, considering he's footing the bill?! Love, love, love that man! My life goal is to "Be the change you wish to see in the world". -Ghandi. So I'm a bit of an activist when it comes to things I believe in. I'm madly in love with my husband Ben. He's my perfect guy, a mix of nerd, hippie, class clown, and he's a musician. Plus, he thinks I'm awesome, and that's pretty nice. I'm amazed at how smart, funny and terrific my kids are. Now if I can just get them to clean up after themselves! Oh and BTW, my goofball daughter wanted to list me as her son on her facebook, and I played along and confirmed it not knowing it would mess my profile up, so that's why it says Sydney Sprague is my mother. She is in truth my gorgeous 15yo daughter, and my compromise is to list Sydney Smith (which is what I call her when I'm yelling at her anyway ;), as my daughter. And just so y'all know, if you don't, my mom is the wonderful Linda Dahlstrom, and my dad is the terrific Del Dahlstrom.".
