Kathleen's Story

I was one of the strange catholic kids who sat up front with the other nerds. Only the teachers liked us. On Thursdays we would be bussed out for instruction at the parish. Mrs. Schultz the principal at Charlotte Avenue used to read my poetry over the loudspeaker during morning announcements. I am still a poet. Mrs. Ball couldn't make me sing the scales but she sure could make me cry! In junior high I wore raggedy clothes and was always slinking off to the bathroom to smoke. I had Mrs. Titus for English and she inspired me. I got asked to leave a social studies class once for asking too many questions. I hated gym but was with the sync. swimming team. I loved my home economic classes. My mother made me take Latin and I dropped out after a week. guidance counselor named Don Brocious became my friend and saved my Life! High school was more of the same except I would cut class to go out to the small wooded area and smoke weed with my other weird friends. I dropped out my junior year and got my GED two months later. My test scores were so high the continuing ed director called to find out how I had done it? I thought of the evenings I would cut class to go smoke weed with my girlfriends, and of the complicated math skills I taught myself as I studied my new found passion for astrolog...Expand for more
y. I have become a gifted astrologer. I started SUNY at Brockort in 1977. I studied creative writing. My mentor, professor and poet, Stan S. Rubin, teaches and writes at Pacific Luthern University. I began publishing my poetry and am still publishing my work. My latest is a book of my memoirs called "Hurricane Kate." I work in social services, am a keen proponent of social justice and am a political activist. Go Bernie Go! I walked with NAMI as a Peer Specialist last week. My brothers and sisters who are challenged my mental health matters are like family to me. I will begin a position in the fall with AmeriCorps as a educator for disadvantaged youth who want to go to college. I think my job site will be in Newport on the Oregon Coast. I attend a small community church called Christ Light Unity which welcomes people of all faiths and embraces teachings from all spiritual paths. It has been my rock for five years and the fellowship is filled with joy and love and wisdom. I have met many wise, loving people there, especially David C.... I am a happy person with many unusual friends and there is much laughter and music and song in my life. I hope to hear from you so we can share your memories. I am quite active on Face Book. Until we meet again, --Kathy Gallagher 5/28/16s
