Kathleen's Story

Life Hey, greetings to old pals and classmates! As I write this I recently "retired" from my first career in public service and am currently working primarily on my real estate investments. I also have my own personnel consultant business, K. J. Hurley and Associates, which is satisfying to me and allows me flexibility in my days. I've lived in the SF Bay area since I was 21, after travels and living in Hawaii for a couple years. I've been in Oakland now since the mid-80s and like the space and beauty of the area. I love to garden and am happy to live here. I much enjoyed working on the Clarion and remember fondly newspaper staffer classmates from that time. I won five college scholarships in journalism during senior year. Alas, personal reasons kept me from accepting out of high school. I did eventually put myself through college, first with an AA at SF City College where I enjoyed being editor of the campus newspaper, and later I earned a degree in Psychology at SFSU. I got an internship with the SF Mayor's Office as part of a Department of Labor Special Master's program and that led to a job offer there. I was working in the Mayor's Employment Office when Mayor Moscone was killed, a critical and sad time in SF history. I soon was offered an opportunity in the SF Police Department to work under their affirmative action consent decree to hire more women and minorities and to develop job-related testing procedures. In a few years I had worked my way up to become in charge of the overall recruitment and selection program. The important and challenging work accomplished there is probably what I am most proud of i...Expand for more
n my career. When I left the SFPD in 1992 to work for the City of Oakland, I had overseen and been part of a huge and permanent change in the SFPD, now led by a woman Police Chief, Heather Fong. In Oakland I oversaw the Public Safety employment and was able to become very familiar with the Fire Department and dispatch functions before taking over as Employment Manager for all departments. Meanwhile, I was investing in residential real estate to augment my public service salary. This now is my primary income focus and I would recommend to any one to invest in rental property if they can. Personally, I am very happy with my partner of many years who is an SF firefighter. We enjoy life with a very special Jack Russell terrier named Itty Bitty. Life is good here and we are pleased to own beach property with a couple small cottages out at Stinson, within an hour's drive of home. We travel and have been to several countries in the past years including parts of Africa, Russia, South and Central America and extensive travels through Europe. We also go to Mexico and Hawaii, sometimes with extended family and friends. I have good and valued relationships with my family. Mom is still with us and my sister Lauren and brother Michael Hurley are treasured friends to me. They all live in the Valley so I go back to visit now and again. Our brother Joe died 20 years ago and we miss him. Other than gardening, photography, film, travel and reading are my major interests. Not really in touch with people from high school any more but would be glad to hear from former classmates and reconnect. Wishing the best to all who read this.
