Kathleen's Story
August 2013 Timeline (2003-2013 and before - submitted for our 40th High School Reunion - Class of '73)
From 1994-2003, I worked as a medical secretary at St. John Hospital, SW Washington Medical Center, and at Child and Adolescent Clinic. In December 2003 my mother died and I started thinking about what is really important. Around that time, I stopped working (in medical settings) to be a full-time parent and rental owner/manager.
My biggest role in the last decade (since May 1998) has been âShannon's momâ. Her father and I separated when she was less than one year old. I survived being a single parent with the help of my good friends, Gramma Helen, Koinonia Christian Singles, BergFreunde Hiking Club, and a good jogging stroller (sort of like Forest Gump, but with a kid in tow).
In 2010, I completed a 2nd Associate degree in Medical Assisting. After several months of job hunting and working as an in-home caregiver, I was hired as Office Assistant III for Washington State University, College of Nursing. WSU Vancouver is a great place to work, complete with acres of beautiful landscaping and hiking trails. Iâve enjoyed helping faculty and nursing students achieve their goals since Oct 2010.
In August 2011, Jeanne Mahaffey and I ran into Don Fias at the 3 Rivers Mall. We found out he was recently widowed and had been through a very painful couple of years. The next day, I invited him to my upcoming birthday dinner. Shortly after, Don and I started walking together around Kalama and Castle Rock. We were married in July 2012.
Don has done a beautiful job remodeling his home in Castle Rock in preparation to sell. Iâve recently moved out of and rented my house by Kalama High School after living there since age 12. It has been updated a time or three. We bought a (perfect for both of us) house on China Garden Rd in Kalama. Itâs the house and setting weâve both dreamed of for many years.
Don still works as IT director for Castle Rock School District. His parents are still living in the Toutle area. His son Zac, wife Nicole and 3 grandchildren are in Longview, wher...Expand for more
e Zac owns a construction business. His son Derek and granddaughter Addison are in Lubbock, Texas. My son Dylan lives in Longview and is in the Army National Guard Reserves. My son Paul, wife Lark and 2 grandchildren live in Lafayette, CO. Daughter, Shannon will start her sophomore year at Kalama High School this year and is doing very well academically and in basketball.
Don and I both love the outdoors, hiking, and bicycling. When weâre not doing rental maintenance or remodeling something to sell or rent, we like spending time together in Godâs country. We are enjoying making our new house our home and looking forward to more opportunities to travel and see grandkids.
Summer 2010 Timeline...
Hi all... I just completed my (second) associates, this time in medical assisting. My internship begins in Sept. 2009 at SW Medical Center, where I worked from 1999-2002 as a medical secretary. From 1994--1998, I worked at St. John as an x-ray assistant & unit secretary.
My two sons are are adults: Dylan is in the Army National Guard Reserves & previously served 4 yrs in the Marines; Paul finished his master's in urban planning last year. He & his wife, Lark, are living & working in Philly and expecting (my first grandchild!) in Sept.
I had my daughter in 1998 at age 42. As of May 2009, she's 11 yrs old. She's smart as a whip, beautiful, & talented. She's starting middle school fall of 2009. She spends time in Beaverton with dad regularly.
I'm still into hiking, bicycling, photograpy, and cooking. I should have made a career of one of these! If you don't count food, I've been vice-free for over 16 years!
I still live in the little house by the school that was my grandparents'. I've made it very comfortable over the years. Three large windows and a new deck overlook the Columbia.
I'm hoping to retire somewhere the NW in the next decade or so, and travel to warm & sunny places in the winter. Planning on ending my landlording career. Would love to have just one home to care for and more time for the outdoors, gardening, and photograpy.
Wishing everyone all the best!
