Kathleen's Story

Kathleen is from Lawton, Iowa. Kathleen's schools include Rapid City Central High School. Kathleen later attended University of South Dakota (BS, History Edu) . Kathleen works(ed) at Retired Ccsd. Movies Kathleen likes include Know These Warning Signs.... More about Kathleen:"I was drafted from teaching in Las Vegas by the Army on 7 July '68. At Fort Lewis Washington (Co C 3d Bn 1st BCT Bde), I was selected to represent the 100,000 Basic Trainee during the Viet Nam era. I went across the parade field from Basic to do AIT (Co B 3d Bn 3d AIT Bde Infantry) and graduated shortly before Christmas of '68. We did not get a leave and were transported up to McCord AFB as Grunts were needed for the Tet Offensive of '68. I was taken out of line and asked if I wanted to go to VN or OCS (Officer Candidate School), as I had a class date. I was held over as a Drill Corporal at my just graduated AIT Bn., which was commanded by Lt. Colonel David H. Hackworth. On 20 Apr. '69 I went to OCS (OC-32-69, 63rd Company, Graduation 2 Oct. '69) at Fort Benning. I had airborne ranger orders but I turned down an Infantry commission. I was sent to VN as an E-1 and I served in Co C/2-501 of the 101st Abn. Div., Oct '69-June '70 as a Grunt. We did the battle for Ripcord, Gladiator, and Granite, AO of the lip of the A Shau Valley, west of Hue. I was RTO for an "outstanding" and "hard charging" Lt. Hargrave for many months in the AO of Firebase Bastogne, Birmingham, and Normandy then we moved northwest to come to the aid of 2/506 AO of FB Granite as we were "abcon" or ready reserve for the 101. I was made a squad leader as an E-4 about the time Lt. Sullivan replaced Lt. Hargrave as platoon leader who went to S-2. We did perimeter duty on Granite, Ripcord or Gladiator for a couple of days then we would go back to "hump" the jungle. Co. C/2-501 CAed into the A Shau Valley...Expand for more
. In letters home I wrote where we had NVA in side our NDP (ambush site) and were mortored. Our unit went in to several "hot" LZ's. I felt safer in the jungle because we could hide (had cover) but on Firebases we had a bunker to protect. 42 years later and I still get up at dawn to take down my trip wires (flares), police up my two claymores (mines) at the ambush site, "ruck up" and "drive on" down the trail of life..."it's nothin but a thing"...I am just passin through. Our MO was to walk "in the boonies" for 50 minutes then rest 10, sit in the trail in single line for lunch then set up an ambush on a trail at dusk in 2 or 3 man positions. We would "hump" in the "bush" to get to a LZ (landing zone) usually about a week, then CA (combat assult) to another area. We would "go in" to guard a peremeter of a fire base for a couple of days after weeks in the jungle then "walk off" or CA back to "the field." In a letter home I wrote I went 54 days without a shower...now that's "hardcore." We got to go "to the rear" for training or a trip to Eagle Beach occasionally or a week for RR once. I went to Hong Kong. I got out of the Army as an E-4...the Army was not happy with me. We were good soldiers, we were good at our job...I DID MY BEST! Our squad 's pointman Armondo "Mondo" Galindo was the best in the 101...he survived the whole campaign. My DEROS was on 31 May '70 when I got an "early out". I caught a log bird off Granite which was under mortor attack and we had "Gooks in the wire" the night before. A couple of days later I was in Vegas to get my teaching job back. I am happy to have "walked the walk." I have my map and 70 plus letters home for a diary of a Grunt in Viet Nam. I praise the Lord every day that I am still alive. I love to visit Iowa. I love the desert of Nevada. Peace "Stay Alert and Stay Alive", Colonel David H. Hackworth".

"Big John" Manning, 60 gunner of 1st squad, 2cd platoon, C/2-501 of the 101st, in the A Shua Valley, VN, Spring '70. Notice the 2 frags...WE used granades to keep "Gooks" off us and brought in arty and a "pink team."
