Kathleen's Story
It is hard to believe that we graduated from Awalt High School in 1965. Where have those almost 57 years gone? I was a member of the 1965 pioneer class at UC Santa Cruz and got my Journalism degree from SJSU in 1976, after I married and my daughter was born. My first marriage ended and I remarried, happily, in 1983. My work life has been varied and interesting. I have worked as a newspaper reporter, a Public Information Officer for a school district, been a book and magazine editor, exhibit designer and, in June 2000, retired as Executive Director of the California History Center and Foundation at De Anza College. we have aged! My daughter, son-in-law and 18-year-old grandson live in Seattle and in February 2020 my husband and I sold our home in California, where I was born and lived my entire life, and moved to Bainbridge Island, Washington. We have the best of both worlds here in our new home. It is a 35-minute ferry ride to downtown Seattle, and all that a large city has to offer - art, theater, museums, restaurants. In contrast, our day-to-day life is in a quiet community with interesting, engaged people and a delightful small town within walking distance. We have managed well through the pandemic of 2020-21 and are looking forward to a more normal approach to life in the coming months. Cheers to my fellow 1965 Awalt graduates.
