Kathleen Williams:

CLASS OF 1964
Silver spring, MD

Kathleen's Story

I have stayed fairly local. I just jumped up one county. I have two adult children. My daughter is in Chicago with her husband and son, with one on the way! My son is in North Carolina with his wife and their two teenage children. Everyone is everything I hoped for. I have had some really rewarding jobs. In the late sixties I went to work for the new office called "Head Start." What an exciting time to work in DC and represent the mid Atlantic states in getting their projects up and running. My specific job was to help the new employees on how to get paid. When my husband was drafted and sent to Vietnam, I collapsed back to my parents home and spent 2 years writing letters to my husband and to President Nixon, and calling the Pentagon. He returned wounded but good enough to be retrained here at Ft. Mead for tanks. As he was recouping, I started work in a private nursery school in Kensington, MD, Barbelle Creative Center for Children. Favorite job ever is working with children. I continued my studies and was certified for teaching and eventually became the director of the school. The owner kept a tight hold on me and I will forever owe her for her knowledge, and loving care of c...Expand for more
hildren. Too bad childcare pays so little, as I left when I started having my children. I was a stay at home mom mostly with 2 part time jobs. One was a private secretary for a medical writer in Bethesda, and the other was an assistant to a French Liaison Officer to the World Bank. I was privileged to be able to attend conferences where many International people spoke. Desmond Tutu and Margaret Thatcher were my favorites. With money as my focus, with two growing children and college in the future, I went to work for an electrical contracting company in Rockville. I happily retired to Columbia, MD, with my new husband. I have stayed in touch with some of my school mates over the years. One of my best friends is Jeri Dicken Lutter. We went all through school together from Kindergarten to High School. Very special.... Others are from Sligo Jr High, and Northwood. Old friends are the best. You don't have to explain things to them.. We lived it together! Now here I am at 77 years old planning a 60 year class reunion with Jeri and Oza Dee Ramsay Houck. I only hope to bring happiness and a fun weekend to my classmates. Here's to a great weekend in September 2024. Hope to see you there!
