Kathleen's Story

The website photo was taken September 13, 2014 in front of my home in Oregon City. The Houston had ventured up for our 50th REUNION as my date the two nights of local festivities. (He had come all the way from Bakersfield, Ca towing his incredible bike, and driving his motor home) and had a trip to Timberline Lodge on his bucket list of things to do once here. Very safe, conscientious driver on his new Harley Davidson bike, but I'm not a motorcycle biker so I had to do a lot of deep breathing to and from the mt. We returned safely and then joined everyone for the second night of our reunion at The Country Club. SO NICELY ORGANIZED an event! We had so much fun seeing everyone in attendance. Of course, we didn't get to talk with everyone at the event, but it was a high to see everyone after so many years! My thanks to Carolyn Shipley and theReunion Team who orchestrated our event! It could not be matched! Currently I've returned to substitute teaching in grades K-12, in three surrounding school districts, and am wanting to put some employment into place for when the districts have their scheduled vacation periods of unpaid time. I worked 3 months at Morrison Child and Family Services, with male youth ages 14-19 who had traveled from their homes and families in Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico, now in lock-down facilities as they go thru the court system to be either returned to their country or sent to safe family members already here in the US. GREAT kids, and very difficult to say good-bye to. My teaching career began in 1968 upon graduation from Southern Oregon University. I quickly headed to Southern California's beaches, teaching in Redondo Beach, Fountain Valley, living in Newport Beach and Laguna Beach, South Laguna Beach for about 14 years. land, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, West, Central and East Africa, The Seychelles, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand. I had the opportunity to stay with Usha Nayumpali, one of our high school exchange students, while in New Delhi, and that was incredibly special...she is someone I admire deeply! She assisted me in giving me my first importer merchandise contact for my small import business in South Laguna when I returned. Having one's own business has its pitfalls and it was awhile before I got back into my teaching career, leading me to the Santa Cruz area where I raised my beautiful daughter as I taught in The Santa Cruz Mountains and Watsonville to the south. For six years I taught in Canby, Gladstone and Portland, and worked in ELD Assessment for The Oregon Department of Education. I taught in San Jose, California for six years before purchasing my Oregon City home, not realizing that my full time teaching career would end there...Oregon would find me too expensive to hire as a 39 year veteran teacher, even though I would be paid at a twelve year entry level. I've substitute taught and had my own state licensed, in-home child care for a year and a half, before venturing out to manage a well-known clothing store for 10 months and beginning my work with Morrison Child and Family Services for 3 months. I love my home and yard, as well as my beloved 3 year old little companions: "Feathers" and "Buddha," a female Bichon Frese and a male Shih Tzu.) I enjoy meeting with friends for relaxing visits over delicious meals, and seeing incredible movies. I enjoy maintaining my yard and home, as well as baking and sewing and shopping. I love the outdoors, and keeping abreast of family and friends. I'm drawn to Tibetan Buddhist teachings and look forward to returning to their classes and meditation in SE Portland, as soon as they resume.
