Kathrine's Story
Life
I work at the University of Illinois for the Department of Intercolligiate Athletics. I am a Strength and Conditioning coach working with Women's Golf, Women's Tennis, Women's Swimming and Diving, and Men's Track and Field. I spend half of my week in the weight room training athletes and working on their nutrition. The rest of my time is spent coaching swimming in the community. I spent Fall of 2006 as the Assistant Coach for Urbana High School Girls Swimming. I had the job as the Urbana Boy's Head Coach, but got my U of I job instead. I also coach for Storm Aquatics, one of the local swim clubs. I am the Lead Coach for Groups I, II, and III...these are basically all swimmers ages 12 and under. I love both my jobs!!! Working with the college athletes has been the best thing to happen for me since I met my boyfriend.
I spent some time in the hospital in 2001, go figure, I have an autoimmune disease that flares up under stress...so does that fit in with my type A personality or what???
Dating a younger guy...in fact, he's 6 months younger than my brother (5 years younger than me)...and he is probably the best thing that's happened to me in a long time. Ryan, is finishing his degree in Secondary Educaton at EIU for English. He got a job teaching at St. Joseph-Odgen High School for fall. It's looking like he will be teaching AP English, Senior English, and Freshman English. He will still be coaching football at Centennial High School in Champaign as there is no coaching position available at St. Joe's yet.
My parents still live over on Whitcomb Drive, my sister, Amy, lives with them and goes to school at Harper. She just recieved her Early Education Assitant Certificate. Peter, my brother, is over in Bloomington at ISU, finishing his last semester in business. He is currently the Assistant Manager at a Restaurant/Night Club.
I own a condo in Savoy, right next to Champaign, and live with my cat. No plans to return to Palatine and can't wait until the parents sell and move away so I can leave that town behind; except for the occassional trip up to Nellies to see bands that refuse to travel past I-80. I have become a true Central Illinoian...my speach pattern has slowed and the accent!!! My family will never stop giving me a hard time about it!!! But, in cased you haven't noticed...every major news caster has the same accent...because it's the easiest to understand!!! Oh, and y'all...Expand for more
is now a permanent part of my vocabulary.
School
I started my undergrad in Psychology, but decided I didn't want to spend ten years in school so switched to dietetics. This was also promted by the untimely death of my god father who had a massive heart attack my freshman year. He was a diabetic that never took care of himself. Through my studies, I found sports nutrtion, and new it was the path I was supposed to take. I am was a grad student for Dr. Ellen Evans in the Kinesiology department, specializing in body composition and bone health. My thesis is looking at elite female athletes and their tendency to develop the Female Athlete Triad and osteoporosis later in life. Preliminary analysis is very encouraging, but if I knew how much work I was giving myself by involving nutrition and body composition, I would have done things differently. So ten years later, my work in the department as a teacher and researcher, helped me get my current job.
College
See School biography....
I did join a sorority, Pi Beta Phi, and regretted almost every minute of it. I have actully become more involved in the sorority now that I am an alum and with older Pi Phi's. I always did better with older people anyway.
Spent most of college at Ben Brownback's appartment drinking and watching Thursday night TV or at Legend's. Spent several Saturdays cleaning up after the hundreds who came to the parties that never got broken up by the cops. Either that or praying to God his roomate or friends didn't get into another fight on 6th street...
Studied my ass off and landed my butt in the hospital because of the pressure I put on myslef...boy, how things have changed...
Workplace
See life profile...
I started working with the University of Illinois Department of Intercollegiate Athletics in November of 2006. My official title is Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach. Because I was hired mid-semester, I am only part-time right now, but it works out great. I worked with Women's Swimming and Diving, Women's Gymnastics, Women's Golf, and Men's Track and Field in the fall. I was basically shadowing another coach to get my bearings. This semester, I am in charge of Women's Golf by myself, and I have started working with another strength coach on Women's Tennis. So, the plan is for me to take over Tennis in the fall. I absolutely LOVE my job and cannot wait for it to become full time...hopefully by fall.
