Kathryn's Story

Life I've been fortunate to have a good sense of humor in this life. I don't know how people get along without one. My husband Paul and I married at 19, when he was still an undergrad at Albany State. I went to Albany State nights and worked days as a secretary. My mom always said, you have to have something to fall back on. In high school I had reluctantly taken shorthand and typing and those humble skills have worked for me in many of the jobs I've held. Who knew that with the advent of computers typing would be so important? Anyway, we lived in Albany throughout most of the 70's while he went to college and then Albany Law. I got a great job with the SUNY Construction Fund and met some of the most interesting people I've ever met in my whole life. I was sad in 1977 to have to move to Oswego, NY, where he took his first (and only) legal position, with the firm of Leonard Amdursky. Eventually that firm became Amdursky, Pelky, Fennell & Wallen and I would become its office manager, but that was in the 90's after having our 4 children: Lisa, Philip, Laura and Paul Jr. We bought the starter house in a housing development and had our first 2 kids, and when I became pregnant for Laura bought a 70 acre farm in the Town of Oswego overlooking Lake Ontario. The house is circa 1865 and was built in stages, with the Italianate brick portion first, then the 1900's addition, then the 1920's kitchen addition. Now it has 5 bedroom...Expand for more
s and would probably make some ambitious person a wonderful B&B. We actually farmed for 12 years, having beef cattle, pigs, chickens, horses, mastiffs and a llama. Eventually we wound that operation down. With Paul working full time as an attorney and me working in the law office, and without the help of my brother Eric to run it, it was more than we were up to. During all of this farm fun and having the herd of children, I managed to complete my B.A. at Oswego State. With my 4 kids in attendance, I graduated in 1988. After that phase, we began traveling to Europe and taking cruises. Our kids one by one went off to college and that freed us up considerably. We've been to England several times, France twice, Spain twice, Greece, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Gibraltar, Morocco, most of the Caribbean islands, and Venezuela, twice, Mexico several times. He would be on the go 52 weeks a year if he could. Currently, we're both retired. Paul says, he'll work from 60-70 if he lives that long. He does do the occasional special legal project. I'm happy as a clam going between our houses in Florida and New York, and raising cockapoo dogs, and taking the occasional trip. My four children seem to be doing what they should be, and that makes me happy. Lisa is on the radio in Pittsburgh; Phil works in Syracuse at Lowe's; Laura works in a local nursing home and Paul Jr. is in college and working part time. I guess I have no regrets.
