Kathy Scott:

CLASS OF 1975
Enumclaw, WA

Kathy's Story

I did not attend Senior year at EHS. At the end of Junior year I went to live with my Grandmother and sister, Janet, in Portland OR. There, Janet and I attended the Portland Job Corps, getting our High School Diplomas and then entering the Federal workforce. Janet at BPA and me at SSA. I am retiring 7/30/2010 after 34 years of service. I married in December, 1976. My daughter was born 1/12/1982 and I was divorced by February of 1984. Abusive relationship are not my style. I had already "been-there-done-that" growing up. I married again in February of 1984. My son was born, then died, before the year was out. Difficult on a relationship as well as my young daughter, life was rocky until I again divorced and remarried in 1999. Third time's a charm! As luck will have it (or fate) I met my soulmate but then lost him to early onset dementia Chrismas of 2002; just 3 years and 2 days after we married. In 2005 I tried one last time for love and was completely taken by a predator who preyed on widow's. After only being married 3 1/2 years, I wound up losing over a 1/2 million dollars in savings, I lost my home, as well as most of my possessions. But I did not lose the love of my family. My sister Janet, also widowed in 2005, my 28 year old daughter Joni and 6 year old granddaughter Skye Rose and I all landed on our feet after losing our home. We had all been living together on the property in Arlington where I had 2 homes on 2 1/2 acres. I also had a career. Now, safely and quietly single, my sister, Janet and I live together in a nice townhouse in Smokey Point (Arlington), WA. The end of July, 2010 I am retiring from my job of 34 years and I'm preparing to be a happy grandma to my special-needs granddaughter, Skye Rose as well as travel the United States and volunteer wherever I'm needed. When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. And I love lemonade!. I am looking forward to this new chapter in my life. I expect it to be the most challenging and rewarding chapter yet! I always wanted to be a nurse when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a bad idea. As it turns out, they were wrong. I had a very rewarding experience helping my husband Bob Scott go through his final days with love and laughter. Actually, my family thought it was a bad idea only because I would get sick at the sight of blood. Turns out, I was really good at First Aid and became a volunteer with the American Red Cross as an instructor and worked for several years in Portland, OR on an Emergency Medical team where I was able to save someone's life.. My favorite way to relax is with a really good book and peace and quiet. My favorite way to blow off steam is on the back of a Harley with the wind blowing in my face....Expand for more
My hero was my grandmother. My grandmother made it through the 6th grade before she left school for good. She never received her high school diploma or equivalent. She raised 4 boys through the Great Depression doing everything from picking berries with her kids by her side to hawking cookware in the mall and doing housekeeping/janitorial work for "high-rise" office buildings in Portland, OR. When my brother, Gary, sister Janet and I were growing up she always seemed to know when we were needing help. At the end of Junior year, 1973 Janet moved to Portland and then I followed in 1974 at the end of my Junior year. We found unconditional love and the sense of family we were always looking to find. Even though she lacked in formal Education, she knew how to balance the books, run her own business (3 different Taverns and then a rooming house), keep 2 teenage girls on track to finishing school and becoming gainfully employed and she did it on her own being widowed herself. She taught us the importance of family, of living within our means and being self-reliant so we were never dependant on someone else for our way of life. I became the first member of my family, ever, to go to college. I did not attend until age 50, but I did attend and was surprised to be receiving all A's, until I got into College Math, where I earned only a B. My daughter, Joni, at 26 became the 2nd member of my family to attend college. She took English and Poetry writing and self-published her own collection of poems that sold locally at a bookstore and at her High School. She did not fare well in Math so she stopped college and attended a 9-month certificate program which she did very well in. I have the most adorable Pomeranian brothers. Harley and Chester are littlermates and will be 7 on 9/25/2010. Their 1/2 brother, Davidson, I am sad to say, was sent to doggie heaven May-Day of 2009 after being attacked by a Pitt-Bull. Harley is 10 pounds and looks like a little fox and is always smiling. He loves to tease Janet's cat Manny (we thought he was a she and originally named the cat Mandy since we are Barry Manilow fans! Oh, well) He also loves to go "Hot Rodding" and cruising. I used to drive him around in my 1938 Chevy hot rod and he would stand up with his head out the window grinning at everyone he'd see. He thought everyone was looking at him. I didn't have the heart to tell him it was the car, silly, THE CAR! Anyway, we had fun until my husband #4 sold my 1999 Harley Fat Boy, sold my hot rod and I temporarily lost my way. But, I'm back, now. Can't keep the Scottish down for long! My current age is 52. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be having 1 foot in the grave. I was so completely wrong. My life is just beginning!.
