Kathy's Story

Life So as many do not know, I had a very unstable family life through HS. For those of you who I saw at the 10 yr reunion, I know this comes as a surprise as most of you first said--you have hair! then, are you gay? and then "you were such a goodie goodie in high school". Yes, surprise, surprise, Charlotte thought I was an out of control kid! I had no hair because my mother was in denial that I was female or a s-xual being. To her hair was just too feminine and s-xual. If I looked like a boy it would save her from dealing with interest from boys. I was not permitted to have hair over my ears. I played sports and interacted with other adults to stay away from HER house as much as possible. No, I am not gay, but if I was, only she would care and probably freak out more than she did. Charlotte hauled me into a psychologist in Jan of senior year, concerned that I was interested in guys at too young of an age & that I was lewd. She had had 2 prior meetings with him to prepare him to meet me and had given him all these 'horror' stories about me. He was over 60 and when I finally met him, he was in shock. After hearing from her, he thought when he met me it would be like meeting Satan. After talking for a few weeks, he informed me that I did need counseling, but not because I had a bad attitude or that I was a problem child, but because my parents were so off in what they thought of me and in what they found as acceptable and how they disciplined me, that I would need counseling to get away from the toxic relationship and find out what was normal or acceptable behavior. When I informed my mother this after my final beating, she refused to let me see the therapist on her dollar. I immediately moved out of HER house. Thankfully, my psy. refused to stop seeing me and ended up saving my life by giving me free sessions for almost 2 years, 2, sometimes 3 times a week. No relationship...Expand for more
with my family was possible and I had to deal with it like death. My family died for me when I was 18 and a senior in HS. I survived because of the goodness of others who did not share my blood line. I lived with wonderful family's until college. My thanks to Pam and the Kalinoski family, Lynn Snyder and her parents and Alex Anderson's family, who helped me in my times of need and let me live with them until I was ready/able to move on. I moved out of my parents house with $85 in my pocket, a part time job and pressure as to what I would do about surviving and the insanity of my mother thinking I was the worst kid possible. My ability to play soccer and my grades earned me more than a few partial soccer scholarships, with the most important being an offer to go to University of North Carolina. Many from this team went on to play and win in the Womens World Cup. I had played with Mia Hamm and many of the others from the original world cup team over the years in the Olympic Development program and my dedication/skills to the game were alive and well. Unfortunately, instead of finding a way for me to go or encouraging me to go to UNC for soccer, my mother shut me down by telling me they would not help me financially, ever and I would never be able to afford an out of state school. I was told I needed to find a paying job and forget about soccer because I was 18 and on my own. My only regret in life is not communicating this to other adults who would have encouraged me to go anyway. As an adult, I now know things would have worked out, as they do. I wrote this for my mother and family, who have, after 20 some years of no contact, recently attempted to inject their negative judgment into my life again. I will rewrite my profile after they have time to read it, as I have had a wonderful, eventful life since. They do not know me and most stories from them are lies.
