Kathy's Story

I have been married 15 years to a kind and loving man and we have a 10-year old son. We have been living in Germany for 6 six years. My husband retired from the military two years ago and is currently a Department of Defense civilain employee. We used to live in Wiesbaden and now live in a small town near Heidelberg. For the first time in our married life, we live in a single-family home with a yard, and so we enjoy spending time in the garden and puttering around the house. We enjoy visiting nearby historic sites and museums, but we stay home more than we used to since the Euro has gone up so much. Fortunately, there is lots to do here within a short walk, bike ride or drive away. Most of my time is spent supporting my son's activities in Cub Scouts and dance (tap, ballroom and ballet.) My son is dyslexic and I homeschool part-time to help him with his studies and teach hands-on math classes for my local homeschool association. We plan on shifting into nearly-fulltime homeschooling next year and I am both excited and nervous. Most of my energy has gone into learning how to teach to my son's abilities and disabilities, with many long hours in front of the computer, looking for answers. He has made a lot of progress in the past few years and I am so ...Expand for more
glad that he finally can read independantly for pleasure. He has lots of interests. Right now his passions are historic sailing ships, French history (esp. Napoleon). anything Scottish, and taking apart anything mechanical. He want to grow up to be a Naval engineer, or maybe an architect, or maybe the next Gene Kelly. Like many moms of special needs kids, it has become a second career and I am starting work on my Master's in Education with the goal of becoming a secondary (middle school) math teacher and I hope to be able to teach remedial math courses to adults at a community college. There's a huge market for it and I enjoy helping math phobics. Most of my life, I've taught others in some capacity or another, so I might as well get certified and paid for it! We own a house in Algoma, Wisconsin, and I am hopeful someday we will be able to settle down there a bit closer to Marquette, and put down roots. The Army mobile lifestyle is wearing a bit thin after so many years, but it has been a good life for us and we are grateful for the financial security it has given us. Fortunately deployments to war zones are pretty much a thing of the past, and we are seldom separated for more than a month at a time. Being together as a family is a great blessing.
