Kathy's Story

Our family left Shattuck in 1966, so I entered 6th grade in Chapel Hill, NC and didn't actually attend high school in Shattuck. My oldest brother, Steve Davis, graduated from SHS in 1967, went to college at OSU and settled in Ponca City. He was killed in an auto accident in 1985 and is buried in Ponca City. Steve's two daughters are grown, the oldest, Kristen, is in Ponca and the youngest, Stephanie, is in Kansas City. My next oldest brother, Mike, graduated from Chapel Hill Sr High in 1969, is married and living near the coast in South Carolina. The youngest of my brothers, Jerry, graduated fromn CHSHS in 1971, married and has 3 children and 5 grandchildren, with 2 more on the way. Jerry lives in Salisbury, NC. My younger sister, Jan, died in 1993 of a cerebral aneurysm. She and her husband of 7 years lived in Boone, NC. Jan is buried near the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Appalachian Mtns near Boone. I graduated from CHSHS in 1973; and I thought of my classmates back in Shattuck on that day! There were 300+ in my graduating class, and I figured you guys were a much smaller and friendlier class! High school was not a happy place to be in the 1970's in Chapel Hill, NC. I went to college at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC (where my little sister followed and eventually lived until her death). Boone is a small mountain town with a medium-size University. A great place to go to college! I left Boone to attend graduate school at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA. What a change from Shattuck to Chapel Hill to Boone to Atlanta!! It took me a few years to get used to trees in NC, and a few more years to get used to ...Expand for more
concrete in the city! I earned my Master degree in Community Counseling in 1979 and have worked in the field of mental health in many different settings. I returned to school in 1998 and earned a Master degree in Theology at Emory University in Atlanta. And have I recently started work on my PhD in Adult Education at the University of Georgia. I hope I never have to stop going to school, so Adult and Continuing Education is the perfect field for me - it combines counseling, theology and education all into one. Recently I was talking about my childhood in Shattuck and how I experienced it as a great little town to grow up in. A friend suggested that I look up my high school and find out where my childhood friends are. So, this is my effort. Kim McIntosh and I were in touch several decades ago. I drove through town one Sunday morning about 15 years ago (driving back to Georgia from a ski trip in Colorado) and visited with Mrs. Adeline Abbott after church. Folks said I look just like my mother then - which I still do!! Everyone in Shattuck called my mother "Kitty," while family and friends back in North Carolina call her "Mary Katherine." My Mom is 80 years old this summer, and is still going strong. She is still very involved in the United Methodist Church (she is a Lay Preacher in her home church), and spends as much time as she can with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Here's hoping all my childhood friends from Shattuck are as happy and fulfilled in life as I am. If you want to catch up and tell me stories about growing up in Shattuck, feel free to "friend me" on Facebook. Blessings, Kathy (aka "Katie")
