Kathy's Story

Life Well, if you're really that bored, read on. In my last year of high school ('71-'72) I was not ready to graduate. My grades were poor; I was a mess. However, in March I made a life-changing decision. Unfortunately, my change in attitude came too late to improve my grades because it was so late in the school year. That summer my parents and I convinced Mr. Morris to let me return and do what would have been my real grade 12 along with kids my age. I went on to get over 80% in most of my classes (except Office Practise which is hilarious because I've been a secretary ever since leaving school)!! My highest grade was 89 in music (!) with Mr. Jones. On March 12, 1972, after years of being the teachers' worst nightmare and a couple of years of drinking and taking drugs, I handed my life over to the Lord Jesus Christ. That Sunday night, a group of Christians from Emery came to the little church my parents dragged me to and, in their programme, gave some testimonies. The one I remember the most was John Thornloe. He had a glow about him while he spoke of the Lord Jesus. I decided that if what John was saying about Jesus was true, I wanted it. Nothing happened. THEN... the next morning when I woke up, everything had changed. Suddenly all my anger was gone; the fear was gone; and to coin a phrase, everything seemed brighter. I finally understood what it meant to feel like a "new creation". I went to school and everyone around my locker was waiting to hear how drunk I got over the weekend. Instead, I told them the above and they all thought I'd gone mad but for the first time in my life, I was at peace. After high school I had a few unfulfilling jobs until I came across an advertisement for a receptionist for "Campus Co-operative Residence, Inc.". It was a student housing organization on the U. of T. campus. A committee of students hired a general manager, a bookkeeper and a receptionist (me). The head office was just south of Bloor, on Huron St., a block below "Rochdale". While there I moved downtown and started going to Knox Presbyterian Church where I met this neat girl who was attending U. of T. We became fast friends. When she returned in September 1976 to do her third year...Expand for more
, she brought her "little" brother with her, to do his first year. I was interested in some guy at Knox at the time but this gentle (not to mention cute) younger guy was quietly pursuing me. Long story short, we ended up getting married in November 1978. After working at the Co-op for a few years, some unpleasant issues started getting to me so I bailed and ended up on the York University Campus July 1980. When a job turned sour (in that co-workers or professors started treating me badly) I'd move to a new job on campus. During this time, the anger/fear I had before I knew the Lord started to return. I was in a few jobs at York for a total of 16 years. I'm ashamed to say that during that time I was far from God. (Guess who moved?) My folks died in the '90s. My employment got even harder to maintain. Over the years fear controlled me in many areas so I never had children, never took risks. Finally, feeling weary and beaten, I left my last job at York University in June 1996. For a few years I was a recluse. My fear drove me back to God in desperation where He welcomed me with open arms. Bit-by-bit He has brought me through things and my relationship with Him now is deeper than ever. Have been singing all my life and was in a singing group (September 1999 - June 2008) that ministered to congregations in the G.T.A. We have 3 CDs. Anxiety still hangs over me but Joyce Meyer said "do it afraid", so with God's help, I will persevere. Am currently looking for a job even though I'm fearful. I know He will never leave me nor forsake me. (That's from the book of "Hebrews" in the New Testament, Chapter 13, verse 5). Hope this finds you well and that I'll see some of you at Emery's 50th (if not before). Cathy (Johnson) McCulloch is involved in planning it. ttfn Workplace My info is in my life bio. There are only 7 characters left there so I couldn't change/add anything. I have been applying for jobs but no one wants me. (Sniff!) :-| Oh well. I'll just keep on until I stumble across the right one. God knows what He is doing. I don't want a job that will end up being a disaster for myself or the unsuspecting employer! Ha! Better go. I need to send out another resume!! ttfn ktg
