Jack's Story

I enlisted in the Navy April 1966 for my 6 year obligation. I began my tour of duty on August 3 1966. I was never out to sea. My main duty stations were Alameda Naval Air Station Alameda, California. Where I was assigned to the aviation fuel supply and delivery divison. Then to Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada where I did a very similar job. And back to Alameda Air where I then worked in the crash and salvage division. By this time I was a Petty Officer and was given the job of an Arresting Gear Petty officer with a crew of eight sailors. Upon my return to Alamda Naval Air I met a beautiful young lady before I shipped out for NAS Keflavick Iceland. I was to be gone 18 months. So I told her goodbye. I can't remember why or which one of us began writing first But it was not long before I began thinking that she might be the right one for me. So I called her one night at of the cost of 25 dollars for three minutes saying, I miss you, I love you, will you marry me? Kathy and I have been married 39 years. She was and is the right one for me. In May of 1970 I was discharged from the Navy. I began working for Mack Trucks, Mack Western Hayw...Expand for more
ard, California. Things were going as planned. In 1971 we bought our first house had a new car and truck But in January 1973 my father William Allen was fataly injured in a freak accident at the Kentucky Ford Plant. 1974 I enlisted in the U.S. Army California Natioinal Guard with a program called Try One. I was a sergeant but things were not the way they shoud have been. So try one is what I did. in 1985 I was injured in an industrial accident similar to the accident that took my fathers life. My wife is a purchasing supervisor for Owens-Illinois Brockway. She has been with them 40 years and is thinking about retirement. We never had children of our own. We did have 2 boys who lived with us. Anthony was 9 when he came to live with us. Craig was 9 months. Sadly six years later they had to leave us. I'm still acting like a kid at 60 years of age. I wrecked my go-ped and spent 3 days in the hospital. Broken sholder and collasped lung but did I learn? No, bigger engine. Now I rip phone books in hallf. I don't want to grow up. There is some one I think about quiet often. You know who are, but it was not ment to be.
