Kathy's Story
Update:
I became a widow on October 5, 2010. My husband, Ron, became quite ill with a recurring MRSA infection and was not up to conquering it this time. He spent a couple of months in the hospital from the beginning of August 2010. He put up a good fight! I miss him terribly, but happy memories of our 23 years together will be with me forever. He was a great guy and husband!! I still continue to live in the Schaumburg area.
Life:
Married second husband, Ron, 11/30/87. We live in Schaumburg, Illinois; have 3 grown stepsons and 5 grandkids. I retired from Motorola after 20 years in September of 1998; they offered a buyout I could not pass up. I worked 31 years full-time as a secretary which included 11 years at other industries.
My husband just retired Jan. 21, 2003, from Motorola with 35 years of service as an Electrical Engineering/Quality Manager.
Shortly after Ron retired, he was diagnosed with Oral Cancer. At first, radiation treatment seemed to work; however, the cancer returned in Spring 2004 and May 20, 2004, he had a right j...Expand for more
awbone transplant at Loyola
Medical Center in Maywood, IL, (using a small bone from his leg). Recovery was quite challenging for both of us, but Ron is doing remarkably well. I learned how to be a "home nurse" real fast!
Then, in October 2007, Ron was diagnosed with bladder cancer (not related to the oral cancer). He underwent major surgery at Loyola on November 27th to remove the bladder and have a new one reconstructed with part of his intestine. Everything was going well until he developed an infection in his incision about 10 days after surgery and developed major complications of a bowel fistula and a double hernia. He ended up being hospitalized for approx. 8 weeks. On the bright side, the cancer had not spread to the lymph nodes. He's trying to make the best of a bad situation regarding the complications.
We'll probably just stay in the immediate area to be close to Ron's specialists. Future traveling will probably be by auto as it will be more difficult for Ron to travel via air. We have family in Florida, New Mexico, and Utah.
