Kathy's Story
Life
I am married to a Dentist, Al Boyce, who practices in Falls Church. We live in Great Falls, Va., so I never really went too far from home. My son Jeff, left the Military and is living and working in Charleston, WVa. In February of 2007, he made me a Grandmother. I now have a beautiful little granddaughter, Madeline Grace. It's a love like I've never known. My daughter Johanna, graduated from Shenandoah University and Music Conservatory in 2007 and is a practicing Music Therapist. Along with her full time job, she is also going to Grad School at the Shenandoah Music Conservatory. She is engaged to be married to her high school sweet heart. The date is set for June 4, 2010. We are so excited! Mike is a great guy.
The wedding was BEAUTIFUL!! I can't believe my baby girl is all grown up and married! Everything came off without a hitch and for that we were all very grateful. My little Granddaughter, Madeline was the flower girl and she was just darling! The happy couple bought a town house in Sterling that they had just closed on a couple of days before the wedding. All is right with their world now!
We have 4 dogs and 7 cats, so I am super busy! 2 of our dogs are beautiful Black Lab pups-Jackson and Isabelle-who were 2 in May. Since I have been on sabbatical from working in and managing my husbands dental practice, I have been spending a lot of time training and working with the pups.
Training definitely pays off! Those pups are now 4 and very well behaved dogs now!
I am also very interested in Wildlife and there's a lot of that here in Great Falls. I have been taking care of several red foxes that started coming around several years ago. With all the new houses coming up in every possible place, these guys have no where to go. I feed them and treat their illnesses ie Mange and provide homeopathic medication for this and for rabies. Doing this not only keeps them safe and well, it also protects my pets and those of my neighbors. I've got a few other neighbors doing the same thing now. The gratification comes when the Vixons bring their little cubs around in the late Spring/early Summer.
During Snowmeggden 2010, I began feeding the birds around here. That has turned into 8 bird feeders and 2 humming bird feeders! It's really fun to watch the different birds come as the seasons change and, of course, seeing the ones that we see all year long. I've always got the binoculars and the camera at the ready..and, of course the bird book!
I have always loved horses and I started riding 7 years ago. Funny t...Expand for more
he crazy things we do in our Mid Life Crisis! I am lucky to have a cute Thoroughbred gelding named Spitfire. He is 16.2 hands tall and is a Chestnut and has 3 white socks and a star in the middle of his forehead. He is beautiful! He is boarded at StoneRidge Farm and Show Stables in Great Falls, Va. Now that my Johanna is married and has left home, this is great therapy for the "empty nest syndrome"!!! It's great therapy, no matter what!
Right now I am preparing to have a total knee replacement done in September
or October of 11. I am unable to ride right now..:-(. I have someone leasing Mr. Spitfire and while he's missing me, he's being kept quite busy and will be super gentle when I'm back to riding again! I'm going to have to wean him off of all of those "guilt" treats I've been giving him while I haven't been riding! Horses, like children, aren't as nice to be around when they are spoiled rotten!!
The problem is, I feel so bad and miss riding him so much, I just can't help myself!
Both of my parents are alive and well and still living in the home we grew up in. I am truly blessed!
Update 18 March 2015
I became a GrandMom again on January 25, 2013 to Emma Kathryn and Natalie Elizabeth Horn. Twins! Born my daughter Johanna and her husband Mike.
They are happy and healthy and curious toddlers and we are so Blessed! What's great is that I've got my 3 beautiful GrandAngels right here in the area. Madeline is with me and the twins are in Sterling!
We are in a consortium with one of my brothers and our cousin for Nationals games. We've got great seats and we gave a lot of fun....especially when we win!
2014 was a hard year for our family as we lost our Dad on April 18 th and our Mom on December 30th. Dad would have been 87 on his next birthday and passed after a very short illness.
Mom had just had her 86th birthday in November and she passed after suffering complications from the blood thinner, Coumadin that she was given after receiving a new aortic heart valve last March.
If any of you have elderly parents or other family or friends on this medication, you may want to look up Coumadin Induced Necrosis and ask their doc to prescribe another medication.
The family home is on the market now. It's weird to see it empty after 51 years of love, kids, pets, grand and great grand kids..all the things that make a house a home...family.
The good thing about family is that it knows no single address. We were blessed to have our parents for so long, but we will carry on.
I hope all of you reading this are well and happy.
