Kathryn's Story

I had typed a pretty long story and then my computer jumped a page and I lost it, so here is the short version. If you want to know details just ask. Aug 1981 - AACC - flunked out academically dismissed Feb 1982 - AACC back on academic probation Nov 1982 - met first husband (that sounds so bad) May 1984 - married first husband Oct 1986 - divorced first husband Aug 1988 - Off to AF Basic training in Lackland AFB San Antonio TX - I can see the looks of shock :-) Oct 1988 - Off to Keesler AFB Biloxi MS - trained as an Aircraft Control and Warning Radar Specialist (Tactical radars that interrogate an Aircraft's transponder to determine friend or foe - if foe - call in the big guns and buh-bye!) Dec 1988 - met second husband (I promise this is the finale one) Jun 1989 - Graduated "Tech School" and married my second husband Aug 1990 - Reassigned to Vehicle Ops at Pope AFB Fayette"nam" NC - fun fact - Pope is in the middle of Fort Bragg and exists solely to support the 82d ABN Boy do I have some stories - DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM Nov 1992 - Reassigned to the METNAV shop at Pope (Meteorological and Navigations Systems on the ground for the Aircraft to navigate) you were considered an expert if you say the full title without getting your tongue wrapped around your eye teeth! Jul 1993 - Lazy NCO and paperwork snafu and I ended up in Personnel (HR Basically) Oct 1993 - Off to Travis AFB CA halfway between San Fran and Sacramento (hubby became a recruiter) 1993 - 199? - Constant deployments to Middle East everytime Saddam Hussein did not cooperate with inspectors! Aug 1996 - Hubbie assigned to the AMOG at Travis - anytime the balloon went up in any part of the world the AMOG was the first in to establish Command and Control until more permanent folks arrived then back to base and back to transfer command and control for redeployment Jan 2000 - Off to Andersen AFB Guam (hubbie off to Osan AB Korea) fun fact- in the AF Join-spouse overseas is same theater - LOVED LOVED LOVED this assignment and want to return some day. Got Open Water Deep Dive certified and dove my butt off!!!! Also realized a bucket list check off - went to the NCO Academy in Japan so I got to see some of where I was born May 2001 - Back to Travis Sep 11 2001 - You know - so hubbie was off as soon as planes could fly again, came back in Nov and redeployed in Dec for a year April 2002 - Pop diagnosed with cancer and in July was transferred into Hospice Jan 2003 - Off to the Pentagon - hubbie retired in 2002 Most of my flight mates had been in the Pentagon for Sep 11 and I am still in awe of them, After surviving, instead of using our sister flight at Bolling, those same people who had just survived had to go back in and do search and recovery (let's face it there was no rescue!) if you could say there was anything good about it, the Wing the plane hit was just finishing renovations or casualties could have been SO MUCH worse. 1 Sep 2008 - after trying for years to move to Fort Meade (we lived in Hanover which didn't even exist in 1988 when I left) - I retired from the Air Force. My retirement was held at the Women's Memorial at Arlington Became a Human Capital Strategist for the Program Management Office Defense Travel System in Arlington VA Mar 2009 - Off to the 93 Air Ground Operations Wing (AGOW) at...Expand for more
Moody AFB Valdosta GA as the Director of Manpower and Personnel (truthfully this was a "try to save the Marriage move) Sep 2012 - second (and LAST divorce final and took my Mother's maiden name as my last since all the others were from men who had let me down) Mar 2009 - Sep 2023 - AGOW is a tenant wing with no organic support. 4 Ops Groups assigned with the Preponderance of Tactical Air Control Party Airmen in the CONUS assigned, the only Combat Weather Support Group (Yes I stood that up) and a highly specialized Security Forces Group (Base Defense Group) who do not defend the base, but rather egress out from the base to take the fight to the enemy before they could come to the base. I like to say I have 4 groups of trained hunter killers and my undying admiration for every single Airman assigned. I had 2,800 "kids"! Most of the AGOW is spread throughout the CONUS and predominantly on Army installations from Ft Drum NY (35 miles south of the Canadian Border) to Fort Stewart GA out to Fort Bliss TX, back up to Fort Carson CO and everywhere in between and YES I went to every single location. and was so blessed to meet so many of the Airmen whom I loved and admired. Sadly, this old body just couldn't handle it anymore so I retired a second time 30 Sep 2023. Met some really INCREDIBLE people along the way. Fun Fact - the second AGOW Commander was none other than John Horner - the son of Gen Charles Horner who was the Air Component Commander for DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM and I not only got to meet him, but "Chuck and Mary Jo" (John's parents) sort of adopted me and they are amazing and incredible people as is their son. 2018 - 2020 were some of the most difficult years from me. In July 2018, my beloved retirement gift Chesapeake Bay Receiver puppy, Bayli (what else would you expect) crossed the Rainbow Bridge. She was my rock through (military) retirement, divorce, turning 50 and so much in between. Then in Apr 2020 my Mom (who moved here a few months after I did) passed away from internal bleeding. She was my ride or die, my "date" (everyone on the Wing staff knew her and she even had her own polo that said "Ms. Kathryn, Ms. Kat's Mom") my cohort in crime, my sounding board, my cheering section ... I think you get the picture. To quote one of my favorite Hallmark movies (yea I see the UGH expressions) "Grief can be a pretty difficult thing to work through and I will never make sense of losing my Mom" and I am still very much working through it and how much I have changed because of it. I do Thank GOD everyday for her and Pop (and my family, friends and fur babies and all of my Blessings). I am especially grateful for the 18 years I had with her after Pop passed. She had been my best friend until I was 18. Then as with most mothers and daughters the struggle to be seen as an adult happens. I am so INCREDIBLY thankful I got that relationship back, stronger and better than ever!!! Now it is time to get the house fixed up and ready to sell and then off to the sunny beaches of Florida and become a PERMANENT beach bum (Guam hooked me forever!!!) It's hard to cram 42 years into this small space so if you want more, just message me. If you made it this far you deserve a medal! Thank you for taking the time to read all of this! God Bless you and PTL!!!
