Kathy's Story
Life
Decided in 1979 (when my right hand was partially severed in a factory accident) that I could no longer work with horses, so I became a nurse.(Still can't believe it!) Married Bob,a rebel nurse, in 1988. We have a menagerie of exotic animals in our home, along with 2 kids who attended Paramus middle schools and PHS Divorced in 2012.No regrets. Bob became "Hades", as he now calls himself.
School
I did not enjoy high school. I was an avid writer and will never forget the time my English teacher, Mrs. whatsheface (R), handed an assignment back to me with a big fat "?" on it. She didn't believe I wrote it myself!
I was quiet and withdrawn but secretly wished to be aggressive and outgoing. I always felt fat and ugly. I do not have happy memories of high school, but that was my own fault. All that mattered was my beloved horse, Cappy.Later, I purchased an Arabian mare, Missy, and my dad built a barn for her in Oakland, NJ.Missy had pets also--a cat and several black rat snakes.
Workplace
My favorite nursing job was at the Bergen County Jail--yes, I was a jail nurse. Loved it and saved the county a ton of money, because I seemed to have an inherent instinct for "fakers" who demanded to be transported to the ER due to non-existent heart attacks.
I was attacked by an inmate in 1996 and left the jail on very bad terms. County blamed ME for the assault.
I worked part-time as an R.N.at a local nursing home. I also write free-lanced for Sew News and The Nursing Spectrum.
"Retired from nursing in 2008 due to RA and now I am 80% deaf.
In short, if anyone remembers me at all, it is (perhaps) a surprise to know that after all these years and all the pain/tears/regrets/heartache, I am still basically the same person I was ...Expand for more
back in 1971. I still love ALL animals, and refer to my furry critters as ":noonoos." If I could,I'd happily jump back on my horse and ride blissfully through the backwoods of Ringwood and Mahwah. Some things just never change--including ME. Recently, I took a walk down Memory Lane, Petruska Park in my hometown. The brook nearby and little bridge bought back such fond memories of ice skating there during the winters when I was a student at Memorial School. Mrs VanderHeyden was my favorite teacher! I doubt if there's any salamanders or frogs in that brook today, but maybe I'll search for turtles later in the season. I'm willing to bet my old Prix De Nations saddle there's still snappers lurking in there, just as there are in the pond near my home in Rochelle Park.Actually, I live on the border of Paramus and RP--the "slums" of Paramus, so to speak. The GSP Mall is literally my backyard, yet I rarely go there. I HATE shopping! I suppose I'm still a perpetual tomboy at heart
Today, my motto is: Never put off doing something tomorrow if you can do it TODAY! Live for each and every moment. If you love someone, TELL THEM! Don't harbor regrets, frustrations, worries--and most of all, LET GO OF ANY HATE! It is not possible to forget, but it IS possible to forgive! Just ask me--I'm living proof! So go give your kid a hug and call your folks if they're still around.
Aug 2015
Diagnosed with stomach cancer. My new motto:
"be careful what you wish for"
January 2024: Tack on Mesenteric ischemia to my litany of ,medical challenges. Moderate to severe gastroparesis, which may require hyperalimintation. What the heck, I can still attend the reunion in May.. I'll just be ingesting my "food" via the port...if it comes down to that.
