Katie's Story
I went to work on a Norwegian freighter shortly after graduation. I met my husband in Tahiti and we married years later, lived in Tahiti then relocated to SP and went to work, Sam worked at DiCarlo's for 30+ years. I got my RN and worked all over the south bay, then fell into teaching at HOC. What a hoot!!! That was the most fun. I got to be a nurse and a teacher, my two childhood ambitions. It was truly the most fun I ever had working. I trained students to work in the hospital transcribing doctors' orders etc.
I recently retired and have fun with the grandkids and travel all the time. We have a constant flow of friends and family from Tahiti and France so never a dull moment at home. I am still trying to learn French, it is not a forgiving language, but with some good wine it gets better.
I have taken up gardening, if you can call it that.
My favorite stuff has not changed much, I still love old movies, books, music and people. Love learning new things and going to out of the way places.
The my last trip was the 50th anniversary of the Miss Tahiti competition in June, in Papeete. They really like big productions, arrived at 7PM and the winner was ...Expand for more
not crowned until 2AM... There is always something to do.
Future plans, the Panama canal, So. America and the Galapagos Islands. I can only dream of a trip to Italy and the med... just too darn far, I could fly to Miami and stop over then hop to Spain, and show up somewhere, but that is just too much airport stuff.
I hate the fact that life is so complicated; security, locked school campuses and life in general requires a constant vigil. How lucky were we, spend the day at the beach, play in the park at night, roam the neighborhood with friends on a summer's evening, that is something my grandkids will never know.
I like writing and painting and rehab old dolls. I sew and nobody complains...cool...
and lots of other stuff when I have time...
Update...
We did the canal, I got a kick out of seeing the people in the viewing stands watching the ships pass through the locks... Went to Spain, via the Atlantic crossing, great weather, spectacular sunsets... Sam made friends with all the bartenders, even found crew that sailed to tahiti. Life is good, too busy doing what? Just busy... Still do a lot of dinners with dear friends from Tahiti, and so it goes.
