Kay's Story
Here it is 38 years later, but just seems like yesterday when I graduated in 1972. Kathy Gardino and I had planned to join the navy together but on my 18th birthday I met my future husband Lloyd Darr. We dated one month and was married. He was in the Army stationed at Fort Carson. Lloyd had just got back from Vietnam a couple of months before we meet. He had a 500 Honda motorcycle that he taught me how to drive and have been driving and riding ever since. We lived in Colorado for a year and then when he got out of the Army we moved to Quapaw OK (northeast corner) Lloyd had grew up in Picher and had a job waiting. Our first son Chuck, was born in Colorado Springs, then after moving to Quapaw along came Walter, we moved to North Miami, OK and started buying a house. We then had John and Katie. We have 3 grandkids and 2 step grandkids. Love being a grandparent. In "86 I got my EMT's(emergency medical techs) license and volunteered on two different ambulance services for 20 years In '89 I went to work at one of the local restaurants as hostess for ten years, besides taking ambulance calls. Then in '94 I put in for Police Chief of North Miami and got hired. Served for 14 years on the police department and retired due to health. I worked as park ranger in '97 I also did transports for the sheriffs department in '98-99. As you can see I was a work alcholic and adrenaline junkie, but always made time for family and friends. Now all I am doing is being on the town council, appointed as police commissioner, youth leader at church(8 years now), help with the church's food pantry and spend time with family and friends. Lloyd got laid off a year ago after being with KMT waterjets for 35 and a half years. He's drawing unemployment and trying to get veterans disability. We plan on traveling and seeing the country. We love to go motorcycle riding and had planned on seeing the country that away but now with the health problems we have we will just enjoy the short rides.
If anyone remembers my brothers Butch and Budd--Butch lives back here now after living in California for 28 years. He's divorced, has two daughters and three grandaug...Expand for more
hters. He's on disability after having a couple of heart attacks. Budd is living up at Kalispell MT. He's on disability. He camps out all summer and use to some in the winter but hasn't done that lately. He's an avid hiker and volunteers
with opening up paths in the spring in the federal park and use to the state park. He never has married.
Kathy went on to join the navy and met her husband Mike then. They live outside of Fayettville AR. Lloyd goes to the VA Hospital at Fayettville, so I give Kathy a call and we usually get together for lunch. She just retired from the postal service last fall.
Am looking forward to class reunion in 2012 if we have one.
Another year, 2010. has passed and this one is off to a flying leap. Suppose to have a winter blizzard coming in tonight and tomorrow. As long as the ice gpes around us we just get snow--I'm alright with that. Hope this year brings forth new memories, new friends and many blessings for everyone--just remember the memories you have already made, the wonderful friends you have.
Will here it is Feb. of 2011and we're surrounded by snow. Got 22 inches last week, then 6 inches more this past Wednesday, Got down to minus 20 here last night and thats the coldest that anyone can remember it getting here. Brrrrrrrr!! Still lovin the snow though. Just cann't get out in i like I use to cause of my asthma. Just got off of Predinsone--it just does lovely things to my figure--makes me gain weight and puff out--my lung doctor got me on Social Security disability. In July, My oldest sister, Sharon, found out that she had breast cancer this past spring and went through surgery and radiation. Then a week after she told me, one of my friends here found out she had cancer of the lymph nodes and was in her chest and stomach, they did kemo on her, then a week after that I came down with shingles. I've never hurt that bad. Had them a month and the pain two months. Sharon and Marta are cancer free at this time. Went to Arizona in Sept. to see my sister and her husband. Had a real nice visit. Plan on going this year also and to the Springs, Forrest and on up to Montana to see Marvin(Budd).
