Kayne's Story
Who knew owls like little dogs? I almost lost my 8 pound yorkie/maltese the other night to a very stealthy predator --- a great horned owl. I was in my backyard, which is adjacent to the Phoenix Mountain Preserver, swimming around midnight. One minute I see 3 dogs sitting by the pool waiting for me to get out and the next moment there were only two. The other dogs didn't even bark --- I don't think they saw it happen --- it was so fast. ecent light and then I see 'ChaCha" in the claws of this bird wriggling and squirming for all she's worth. I'm screaming and throwing small rocks at the owl and it let's ChaCha go --- she falls about 12 feet into a bush that broke her fall. I could see she was pretty bloody and her little belly was herniated from the fall. I rushed her to the Vet. Fortunately, the talons didnt injure any vital organs, so the hernia was repaired and drains put in to keep the wounds from infection. She is really doing well and on the road to complete receovery. Needless to say no more midnight swims with the dogs!
