David's Story

After leaving Sunset I attended Portland Community College in 1972 for a year. Then I was off to U of O in 1973 to 74 where I was fortunate enough to work and meet Randy Shilts, this outspoken lean guy with stringy red hair. Randy later went on to write for the San Francisco Chronicle as well as authored three books, The Band Played On, Mayor of Castro Street, The Life and Times of Harvey Milk and one other. It was in a small furnance room at U of O where Randy along with a small group of us helped to create the first Gay Student Union on campus. What an exciting time! My move from Portland, OR to Hollywood began in April of 1976! I've called Los Angeles home now for over 35 years which I've grown to love despite the various negative aspects associated with it. You either Love it or Hate it! I still enjoy my yearly visits to the Portland area where a few family members still reside along with close friends and yes, the memories of where it all started for me. Re-locating to Los Angeles has been one of the most rewarding, memorable and life-altering experiences for me, more than anyone could ever imagine. Special thanks to the non-profit world. The American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Research (EGPAF), and Starlight Childrens Foundation. It was through the heart-wrenching work of these organizations that I was given the chance to rub elbows with some of Hollywoods most fascinating people from the world of stage, screen, and music along with making a difference in the world. It was quite the eye opener. I began in this field in 1991 shortly after my confirmation from my doctor that I had tested positive for the AIDS virus. I thought my life had ebbed then would soon become a statistic in the books like so many of my friends before me. A sad realization of the devasting disease is loosing over 100 friends and a long time partner of 10 years. After dealing with my diagnosis I decided that I had to change how my life was going, no more dealing with peoples attitude with no glory or thanks. I needed to make a difference in peoples lives along with my own. Thanks to a friends lead I applied as a Grants Assistant at amfAR. I interviewed and was hired that same week. My life changed forever! Bernie thank you for allowing me the opportunity to touch so many beautiful lives during those years as well as today! Working in that field brought the best and worst in people. We had hate mail at amfAR where they mentioned "I hope you all die from AIDS" You all deserve death, and on and on. Reading it only confirmed how much there was a need for education and kindred spirits. During the worst of the AIDS epidemic many of us were loosing as many as 5 friends per week. We would take shifts on visiting them in the...Expand for more
hospital AIDS wards, hospices, and finally their homes for those who were able to have the support of their families as they passed away with pride and dignity. Being gay and the stigma attached to HIV/AIDS at the time many were abandoned by family and/or friends. Those were very disturbing times understanding how families would desolve relationships with their sons and/or daughters during their most vulerable time. Allowing them to die alone without their love and support, thats a crime. I have experienced more death than my parents have in their entire lifetime. I've lost well over 100 friends to AIDS as well as a long time companion of 10 years, Michael Jaqubino (picture with sunflowers and gravestone). Last month I received news of yet another friend who lost their battle to this disease. Unfortunately, Our class has lost several members to HIV/AIDS including my close friend Dave Dunkle, Sunsets Yearbook Photographer. There should be a Memorial page on Classmates for those of us that have experienced the loss of our fellow classmates. Especially for those of us that live a great distance away and are unable to attend their service. On January 18,2005 my brother Michael passed away (Class of 1974) in a tragic car accident in Oregon City! His undying spirit, musical talent, that sense of humor of his along with his jest for life will be missed. At his funeral many of Michaels colleagues and friends, introduced themselves to me saying what a wonderful soul he was and how special he made each one of them feel. That was Michael! I am blessed to have had him in my life! My nephew Cason who is now a junior at Sunset continues to keep his spirit close to me along with my sister (Beaverton Class of 1966) who lives in Southern California along with my nephew and niece. Life has slowed down a bit for me. My health lately has been a bit challenging. However keeping a positive attitude towards my fellow man and life is the key to longevity. Age I guess has something to do with that they say too. Well I do not like to get caught up in the age thing. I hope I hear from other classmates, especially those who have been dealing with various issues in their life that might give some inspiration to others going through similar situations. Life is wonderful and so blessed with the friends that continue to stay in my family circle. Please continue to stay well, healthy and in good spirits! God counts on each one of us to bring our talents to others in and out of crisis. Thank you for letting be share. If anyone would like to get in touch with me you may contact me. I've helped so many people who are dealing with HIV/AIDS situations and don't have anyone to discuss it with. I'm a great listener as well as resource guide. Love and light, David Keesey
