Keith (Jeff)'s Story

Biography of Keith (Jeff) Duffield at; kd100(at)telus.net I was born in Toronto, Ontario, the only son of my late parents; Stan and Madeline. My early years were spent growing up in an apartment in Regent Park North (Old Cabbagetown), but my family later moved to the east-end and into a two-story brick house on Bloomfield Avenue. I first attended Kindergarten and Grade 1 at Sprucecourt PS in Cabbagetown, then Grades 2 to 6 at Roden School (the old one) and then Grades 7 and 8 at Fairmount Park Sr. Public School from Sep 1966 to Jun 1968, under the name of Jeff Duffield. Our class went to Expo67. I attended Danforth Technical (High) School from Sep 1968 to Mar 1970 and worked at the CBC, as Production Assistant during the summer of 1969. During the summer of 1970, I had the opportunity to sail on the Hudson's Bay Company's 17th century square-rigged ship replica; Ketch NONSUCH, as a guest of the captain and crew. When the 1970 tour was completed, her late captain Adrian Small (he served as second-mate on the MAYFLOWER II) arranged that I join the crew of the brigantine; PATHFINDER (Toronto Brigantine Inc.) to gain additional experience. I was asked to return the next year, as a crewmember on the NONSUCH. The 1971 Great Lakes tour was the most exciting experience in my life at that time and has fostered my love of the sea that continues to this today. There is a strong maritime heritage on my maternal side in Nova Scotia. I am also a direct descendant od Stephen Hopkins in 1609 in Jamestown and of the mayflower in 1620, and William Brewster of the Mayflower in 1620. The prospect of returning to school, after such an adventure was difficult and I soon enlisted in the Infantry Reserves (Moss Park), as a Private in the Queen's Own Rifles (QOR), 60th Company, in Communications and stayed with the unit for the next year. I returned to Grade 10 at Central Technical School in Sep 1973, when I realized my future was slipping away and graduated in 1976. I moved out west..., (see full text on GradFinder.Com). In 1979, I met my future wife; Denise while working as a photographer, under the late Perry Mah and the next year I joined Transport Canada and worked on a project team, to install the new Air Traffic Control Systems at the Edmonton International Airport over the next three years. When our daughter; Laurie was born in 1981, I started a fast food delivery business (Lydo) to earn extra money to support a growing family. In 1983 and with the airport project completed, I joined a local cable/community TV station; QCTV Channel 10 (later Videon and now Shaw) in Master Control and later in Production. This was a special time (from 1980 to 1986), as it was a turning point in my personal and professional life. It allowed me to develop self-confidence, self-esteem, grow as part of a team community and overcome extreme shyness that I experienced during my youth. I was laid-off from QCTV in 1986, due to downsizing and soon moved on to a position of authority, as a shop f...Expand for more
oreman for an industrial electronics firm until 1989, when I joined the Government of Canada. My first contact with the cadet movement was in 1996, when my daughter joined RCSCC Warrior #27 and I was elected as President of the Warrior Parent Committee. It was soon afterwards, that the Commanding Officer of Navy League Cadet Corps; C. B. Hill #55 was looking for a volunteer to come aboard, as a Supply Officer and I volunteered again. I also served as Executive Officer (XO) and Branch Director for a time. On December 23, 2002, I was the recipient of The Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal for making a significant contribution to the Government of Canada, her citizens and to the youth of our community, and as a volunteer with the Navy League of Canada. I have over 33 years now in public service (now retired in August 2019) and I will continue to discover new and ever-changing challenges. It is a wonderful experience, which will always remain with me, in my old age (maybe in another 30years). Our daughter got married in 2007, which was our 25th Anniversary. We now have a grand-daughter named Addison (Addy) and a grand-son named Benjamin (Bennie). Denise and I celebrating our 30 years of marriage in Hawaii in 2012, and our 34th in Italy in 2016. Now planning the next one for 2022, because of COVID-19. School SPRUCECOURT PS Sep 1958 - Jun 1959, Jr. Kindergarten, Room 109?
