Keith's Story
Life
Struggled mightily after Dad's death and Mom's alcoholic rages. Still managed to get through H.S. and 4 yrs. college and 1 yr. University. Got my life in order after derailing for 7 years. Head is on straight and I'm married with 3 wonderful kids. I miss the happy days in Queens and the friends I had in PS 181, JHS 231 and SGHS. Loved playing ball in the schoolyards. I wish I never moved away but had to. Spent time in Brooklyn and Mt. Vernon and Tucson, AZ. Now I'm doing well despite the rough childhood. Just want to say hello to anyone who might remember me. It went by so fast.
School
I remember the full scale food fights in JHS 231....what a riot. I remember all the fights I had. I remember the harassment in the cafeteria of SGHS. I remember getting robbed at knifepoint. (YIKES !). I remember the kid with the .22 special in my homeroom. I remember the "Pepper Spray" sprayed in the hallways of SGHS. I remember being asked "for a dime...all I finds I keep?" I remember seeing a H.S. teacher knocked out cold by a student. Vietnam War protest outside SGHS. I remember a 15 yr. old girl run over by a bus outside SGHS. I remember a shooting outside the gym doors leading to the schoolyard at SGHS. I remember John D'Allessandro getting robbed of his Seiko outside of JHS231. I remember Andrew Falkoff getting beat up by the sisters with severe facial scratches (JHS 231). SGHS wrestling team that traveled by city bus and subways to meets. I remember the bathrooms you dare not go into for fear of robbery and assault. I remember 2 wicked fights I was in in the gym at SGHS. You get the picture. Anyone remember these things? At least my kids will never know about these things and maybe get a better education.

I was accepted to the Air Force Academy in 1975 and choose not to go.
PS181 summer centers playing on the 5'4" softball team and winning the MVP award. Mr. Miller and Mr. Shenkman in charge of the summer center. Going swimming at Andrew Jackson H.S. pool every 2nd Tuesday (took the bus).
Fighting some redhead Irish kid in the Gym at JHS231. Flipped him off my back and tore his shirt off his torso and beat his ass. - Had another fight in the Gym at JHS231 against a Haitian kid. Got my nose bloodied and rumor was I got my ass kicked.
While Art Etlinger was in a fight outside of JHS231 some of the brothers tried to rob his wristwatch. I jumped in and saved his watch and told the kids to lay off...let 'em fight. Later we became friends.
While taking the Q111 from 168th St. Jamaica to SGHS 4 thugs got on and robbed only the white passengers at knife point. Had a knife at my throat. Thank God he didn't push it into my neck !
On the block: Good Humor, Mr. Softee, Bungalow Bar and Freezer Fresh ice cream trucks !
Going "down the trail" through the swampy area between 148th Ave. and Kennedy Airport as kids.
Going into the sewers at Brookville Park. We wandered so far and ended up under the Cross Island Pkwy.
Friends I remember: Vinny Herring, Michael Brown, Sherman Green, Albert White, Alan Tate at JHS 231
Girl run over by bus at SGHS. I think her name was Sheila McKenzie. Her brother was in the band with me at JHS231
Throwing pears at school busses on 147th Ave. Got reported. All us kids got our butts whipped by our mothers.
Hey......osteoarthritis is getting to me ! I'm 55 years old and my hips are full of O.A. Left hip resurfaced (BHR) at Somers Ortho / Putnam Hospital 10-27-11. 2 days before the heavy wet snow slammed us.....out of power for 9 days and on crutches !
I became a Grandpa on 3/17/12 (St. Patty's Day). My daughter had a baby girl !
