Kellie's Story
Life
After Kellie grew up moving every two years, she finally escaped the heat of Texas to return to winter... -40 winters in Montreal, Canada where she studied at McGill University. After taking a year off afterwards, she decided to move (yes, again) to the other side of the world and study (that's right, again) for another degree. She has now completed her second degree, in Technical Production from the National Institute of Dramatic Arts, in Sydney, Australia. (that's that school that turned out people like Mel Gibson, Kate Blanchett, Baz Luhrmann, Katherine Martin, Hugo Weaving, and oh yeah, Kellie Knight) After finishing at NIDA, she returned to Montreal to work with Cirque du Soleil on their new show that will be going to Las Vages in 2006. After the holidays, she returned down under and is now working in Melbourne with a rigging company, getting the hands-on experience she needs to one day return to Cirque. Until then, she is enjoying working outside as she helps prep for the Commonwealth Games in a few months, working on her tan while her friends back in Montreal are shovelling snow... She'll take the car and mountain top chalet too please.
School
Kellie started high school at Park City High School in Park City, UT. She moved to Texas halfway through high school. She finished at Allen. Her time there was split between soccer, lacrosse, and drama.
College
First university: McGill Uni in Montreal, Canada. Double majored History...Expand for more
and Theatre. Played soccer, lacrosse, hockey. Did heaps of theatre and LOVED the life in Montreal.
Second university: National Institite of Dramatic Arts in Sydney, Australia. Studied Technical Production, focusing on Technical Directing, Rigging/Mechanist, Lighting. Basically lived at school working on multiple shows in one of the four theatres or two sound stages at school. Lots of opportunities to work in Sydney on outside venues (example Lion King, Opera House, parades, Commonwealth Games)
Workplace
Part of the course of study requires at least twelve weeks in secondments/internships with theatre companies, many of which turn into job offers. Kellie worked with a rigging company in Melbourne, Showtech Australia, where she wouldn't mind returning to work at, Circus Oz in Sydney and Brisbane where she would love to runaway with and travel around Australia taking down and putting up tents (well, maybe minus the dirty and heavy tent part), Sydney Festival, and Cirque du Soleil (Bring on The Cirque!)
After working with Cirque for six months, she returned to Australia to work with Showtech Australia. They are an entertainment rigging company. With this company, she will also have the opportunities to work with Circus Oz and many other companies around Australia and abroad.
After gaining more experience, she hopes to one day return to Cirque in Montreal and help create their future shows.
